  2. Very cool. Reminds my of Ryan's post a week or two ago asking about what kinds of things inspire hot rod designs. These kinds of designs are definitely inspirational for me.

    Thanks for posting it!

That is so incredibly cool. I want a boat. How is it that I live so close to the lake and don't have a boat?? Grr.

Good job! Aristocraft, I think, used to make one just like it in the fifties. I think they started remaking them about 5 years ago. Wooden boats are cool until you put them in the water. Best bet, use it for everything else but running in water, especially, hot sal****er. Folks, this used to be the height of boating in the forties and fifties. Things have changed a bit, huh?:)

  10. HuH?? Man I think pavement is gonna be a little hard on the hull

Yeah well, after looking again at that, it does look kind of funny. What I meant was, wooden boats, have problems with expansion and shrinkage when you take them in and out of the water. Up north this isn't such a problem as here on the Gulf coast. We have boats like that here but they are used more as a conversation piece than anything. Good job on the build though.

One little difference between this boat and the ones you guys are thinking about. this one is covered in a layer of fibergl*** and epoxy. I've read up on the glen-L stuff and the way they do it is to make the boat and wrap it in a tough waterproof shell. if I'm not mistaken the hull itself on that boat is marine plywood, not hardwood strips, then covered as mentioned.

  14. Yep, epoxy inside and out. It'll see the water. It's going to a 16 year old kid. Let's hope he doesn't think it's a submarine:eek:

an old Merc Mark 25 would be the perfect engine for that boat.

That hull deserves a retro merc with the kiekhaefer script! Or just paint a new outboard in the old mercury scheme. Very nice job

Nice work! I love the wooden boats, but not being a fan of refinishing wood, I settled for the next best thing for a water hot rod. '76 Eliminator, 427 BBC, Weiand tunnel ram, B***ett wet headers, Berkeley jet, original '76 gelcoat in beautiful shape. Good for about 75 MPH, but she needs MORE. She looks great behind my '49.

(To coin a phrase) Now that's what I'm talkin' 'bout! Nothing like firing up an open header 427 at day break on the lake, that will wake 'em up!:D

Great thread, Tinbender really dig the boat and the craftsmanship! My first love is wooden boats, but the work to maintain them is more than I can handle right now. Since others posted, here is my other obsession. It's a 1967 Renken, I put my Grandpa's 1967 Chrysler 55hp outboard on it (used 1 season!!!). This saturday will be her maiden voyage with me...

    Very Nice!
Will it actually see time in the water?
I almost bought an old wood speed boat a few years ago. The thing was from about 1955. It was complete including the original trailer, just needed resto, espcially the upper deck from sitting so long - $400 bucks! At the time it could have just as well been $4 million, as we had just bought our house, and money was short. I have regretted not browing the money from someone ever since.

Built a Glen L in the sixties that looked exactly like this one but was 16 foot long and had a V8 Chevy v-drive. Mine was gl*** over wood and ran great until the packing nut on the v-drive vibrated loose and it sunk overnight at the dock. Later got a 18' Howard with a 429 Ford with V-drive and in out box.Red metalflake with silver metalflake upholstery. AHHH, those were the days.

www.fibergl***ics.com a very cool site for the early fibergl*** boats. My buddy had a 50's Dorsett with a 50HP Evenrude...bad *** little runabout.
