Hi Has anyone ever made a copy of a Whippet grill? Any idea how hard it is to find one of these critters! metal,Fiberglass what ever. Hard to come by! Thomas
I know where thiers a few....I imagine your lookin for for cyclinder one???...was know for being stolen and put on dry lakes rods...the six is different..looks much like model A rad shell...can put you in touch with friend has few if you wish..
Why a Whippet shell? there are a few pics missing in this thread, but there are still some good ones. There is a few of a Whippet styled grille shell and buck that was custom made. JMO, but I think they look best when used with a hood top and sides.
I have a rodders journal...given to me as Christmas gift...page 8 tells story of how they used to steal whippet shell..use on dry lakes cars... I have an ad from 1926...the new whippet...its claim to fame...fastest 4 cylinder on the road...5mph to 30mph in 13 seconds....lol... http://carnut.com/cgi-bin/08/image.pl?/photo/rides/08/pic006.jpg the four banger...that later became willys jeep motor...134c.i. L head..
If you think the grille shell is hard to find, try sourcing a radiator after you have the shell. Posted using the Full Custom H.A.M.B. App!
this is my 29 willys, bought this grill couple yrs ago off ebay... I was told it is a whippet grill, but not sure. It does look a lot like a model a grill until you lay one next to it. Don't know what yr it is, but fits the car good.
Yes a four cyl one, 1928. Polyform makes a glass one,but I would like a metal. Any help I can get,if you know someone with one please let me know. Thanks.
Here's a steel one I made for my '30s era champ car, but I decided to go in a different direction so it is for sale. It has a five inch chop built in. Asking $350.
Hey, TFTF that shell is looking prefect for a rod or racer. I was trying to get a friend to turn an "A" shell into a sprint car shell with a little metal adding and shaping. The one he did was for a trade show. He left one side stock (but sectioned) and the other skinned to become a sprinter shell. I think it was a very economical way to make a sprint car shell. Dave
I bought what I was told was a Wippet grill shell on the internet three years ago. It turns out that it is a Willys Overland. and they are taller. Found my first Wippet two years ago at a small town swap meet. It is badly rusted out, but came with a radiator that had a major repair of the upper core. Since that time I've found two descent shells that I'll be using. The radiator is a hard find and it will be hard to find one to use in it's place.I'd like to find a repairman that could undo this earlier patch job. Norm
Here is a copy I made from fiber glass. Then I narrowed it 3 inches and also shortened it 3 inches to fit the car I was building. Had to have a custom radiator built for it as well. Posted using the Full Custom H.A.M.B. App!
I found a rusty one for my Modified project. I keep an eye out for a nicer one. will have a custom radiator built for it eventually.
I don't think there ever was a 6 cylinder Whippet. I have the last Whippet car version here, it is a flathead 4, and it's radiator is not the one used for Lakes cars. The shell is taller and not the gum-drop shape of the earlier ones. I think it is a 1930, I never found a chart of ID numbers to know for sure what year it is. .
I've got an early shell & rad, + hood n cowl; also later shell n rad. Decided I won't be using either of them. Anyone still need/want one... ? . PM. BTW; early curvy one is 28/29, late model is 30/31. Marcus...
Here's one I made for my champ car replica with a five-inch chop. I decided to go in a different direction and won't be using it so it is available. The buck is not for sale.
I found one a couple years ago on ebay for my speedster. Going to be using a pair of Auburn lights, it wasn't cheap but the core looks good.
I have one, found it locally years ago. Have kept it for my daughters T lakesmod were building. -Shiny
Last time I was at Don's Radiator here in Lethbridge, he had a whippet grille shell and was building a new radiator for it. I think I heard him say he was doing it for a few guys in Montana or something. There was a group of people looking to have them, if I heard him right. I wasn't paying too much attention as I it was only a passing comment as I was walking past them. Pretty sure I have the story straight. I could have made a mistake, but its never happened before. If you need a rad, give him a call.
Have a look at my web site, www.olympicspeedsters.com . On the first page is a car I designed and built starting with a Whippet radiator shell. Then if you scroll down and click on "More skills and specialties", it will give you the option of clicking on "More sheet metal fabrication" which will show a Whippet radiator shell I made for a slightly different radiator. When fabricating one from scratch, it can be made to any size and shape, so you don't have to adapt the car to the shell. BTW, the term "grille shell" was never used for a Whippet, Model T, Model A or any early car, because they didn't have grilles. The term is simply "radiator shell".
