Anyone swap a 460 into a 50 Ford F1?

I'm picking up a 50 Ford F1 truck this weekend. It was a flathead V8 but now it doesn't have a motor. I've got a good running 460/C6 in a 79 Ford Ambulance. I tried to sell the ambulance and the motor and noone wanted it. So I've decided to swap the 460/C6 into the 50.

My question is has anyone here done this swap and was there any clearance issues or other problems? And will the 460's weight cause any problems with the stock front springs?

    Thanks.

I've seen BBF and a host of other engines in these early F-1 and F-100 engine bays. Most conflicts occure with cross member/oil pan interference issues. Check over at ford-trucks.com for all the dope on early Ford trucks and conversions.

Hey Fordman, I'm doing just that same thing into a 51 F-1. I'm raising the front end so I won't have that problem. They do sell a oil pan swap that will put the sump in the back, about $180.00. I haven't got the body on the frame yet, but it looks like the firewall will have to move. I don't plan on running the inner fenders, but it looked like that would work(tight). Hope this helps.

My 460 is in a van ch***is so it has a rear sump pan. I'm hoping it will work. The fewer parts I need to buy the sooner the truck will be on the road.

What are you using for mounts/frame brackets? Are you fabbing up some or using a aftermarket crossmember?

I would say you definately need to do something to the front suspension. Thats some weight to add to a flimsy non boxed frame.

I am in the midst of installing a 429/c6 combination in a 55 f-100. I used a van rear sump oil pan and went with the pre-fab engine and trans x-members available from NPD, mid-fifty and several others. I also am using the stock manifolds from the van as well, they hug the block better than others that I looked at.

I did have to remove the x-member under that is mounted under the front of the cab to make room for the c6. I am reinforcing the frame to make up for the loss of support.

as far as the weight issue goes, I am not sure how much the flathead weighs but the Y-block that my truck came with weighs about 150lbs less than the 429/460. I haven't ***embled the entire thing yet but the engine and trans barely make the springs flex (stock front suspension, rebuilt w/new parts)

oh yeah I forgot to add that the x-members were resonabley priced and well made, about $100 for the engine and $35 for the trans

Yeah easy swap as I remember, hell that was in 1984. Used all the stock front susspention and no need for rear sump pan, there is a lot of room in the F-1's engine bay. When I did mine, I used Black Jack headers/ the cheapest headers in the world at the time, for a 2WD 73-79 F series Ford truck. Drove it daily for about 10 years and raced it alot, used a 69 T-bird 429 and it ran 13.00's consistantly. Fordman sent ya a PM.
