Folks Of Interest How many of you are true garage builders ?

Built my first hot rod when I was 15 in my parents garage. Built a engine for it, 327 with a old 671 blower. Did I know exactly what I was doing? Hell no! Figured it out. Was the car fast? Hell yea. Have always built my hot rods and engines myself. Keeps me sane. Kind of.

 

Ya keeps me sane too, ...Except for the Engine noises in my head

I am a garage builder. I'm 30 and finally got my own space. A 19'x19' two car garage. I am thankful just to have a space. Hopefully 2020 I will have a running Model A chassis.

 

I've been building them in a garage, or driveway, for 50+ years now... see my avatar. A long time ago I learned that I can generally do anything as well as most shops can the hard, expensive way; so have done all my own engines, trans, chassis and suspension; also body work, paint and glass work. Only thing I didn't do was the machine work. Installing the interior on my '40 now which has been quite interesting.

I had this one professionally painted simply because I didn't have a place to do it anymore... wish I hadn't.

 

I have a one car garage but it goes all the way thru so I have a portable carport for all the vehicular surgery

 

I have no garage! Does that make me a True Shade Tree Mechanic?

My day job is creating computer graphics, VFX for products, commercials and films. I work on vehicles at home for fun

I do just about everything myself, except rebuild transmissions and re-gear axles. I've just never wanted to attempt that before. I've never worked on vehicles that required nice paint, so I haven't crossed that bridge yet. Most of what I've worked on is 4x4 jeeps/willys, and I intend to keep doing everything myself for my 33 Chevy too

I don't really have a garage though, I used to have a 1 car garage, but that's where all my tools and machines were, no where near enough room for a vehicle so I did all my work in the driveway. Now I don't have a garage or a driveway, just a (new!) 2 car covered "carport" on a concrete pad with alley access, and a walled up 1 car garage "big shed" type thing. It's nice to have more space, but I really wish I had a 3 or 4 car garage, closed up. Maybe someday

I also dabble a bit in machining. I have a small lathe, would like a bigger one, and would like a 3 axis mill.

 

Here's my Caddy mill before I overhauled it and replaced heads with 57 Caddy ported and polished and pulled the Howards M-4 cam and replaced it with a Crane ultra hi rpm drag cam then replaced crankshaft with a Crankshaft Co. stroker kit with 12.1 pistons then it's shown in my rolling chassis circa 1965 . I removed body and Olds. mill and painted frame .

 

I try to do everything myself, if Ive never done it before I will buy the tools required and do my research, usually youtube, books or thehamb and give it a go. Its generally takes a couple of go's to get it right but the knowledge / skills obtained is well worth it. Glen

 

I have done all my work in a 1 car carport. I farm out my engine machining, but I assemble them. I narrow my own rears, modify my frames, really like fabricating my own stuff if I can. Last year I finally poured a slab in the back yard but no roof yet. Built lots of muscle car hot rods during my street racing days which want that long ago since I retired last year. Guess you never get over this stuff.

 

After 41 years this past summer I decided it was time to rebuilt the outside of my Garage. It is an old 1920's truck farm barn that has seen several modifications and additions over the years. Critters were always chewing into the layers of wood siding so I chose a less maintenance approach and used metal siding with some new vinyl and glass block windows this time. Still need to install new upstairs deck railing when the weather breaks. Happy with the results so far.

 

I've since pulled the Chevy out and put a running 4 banger in. I have no heat in the shop so winter's are for collecting parts.

 

After I retired from 30 years of being a mechanic for the Govt. I moved to Florida and opened a shop and turned out some cars.
Sold it all to move to Tn. to do my own thing in a one car garage and 10x20 storage shed.
Hopefully in the spring I can put up a 2 car garage in the back yard.

 

Don't have a garage - where I live separate garages are hard to find so when I work I use a friend's place, which means I have to plan ahead. I used to work on other people's cars for living but then went back to study, moved from one country to another and have a full time OT job and time is tight so I do everything in spurts - I take a few days off and do as much as I can. I Do the things I'm good at (bodywork) on my own, get help from friends on those I'm not so good at lol.

Long before I was a home garage builder, I was a work-in-the-rain-and-snow-behind-the-house builder.
It was so great to build a garage.
Now that my garage overflows, I am back to working outside again

If I didn't do all my own work, I couldn't afford to have a cool car at all.
All the greatest adventures I have had, have come from being too poor to buy my way through.

Garage? That would be nice ....
Ya ...this time of the year living in NW Oregon along the Columbia River....ya a garage would help...
But the house does have 5 bedrooms ...and there's a chance that there are some hot rod parts in some ,most , all of them...and I possibly had to slide a dash panel for my Studebaker down the kitchen counter to have room to prepare my dinner last night, and while relaxing in my new overstuffed oversized reclining chair watching a very large flat screen tv....that may have a tunnel ram setup for a sbc. and a few other vintage intakes placed here and there next to it and whats that on the other side ....looks to be a couple of dropped tube axles some vintage aluminum valve covers , disc brake setups oh ya watch out for that M-22 and scatter shield in the hallway ......and ya its a real possiblity that I'm most likely single.

I dont build transmissions or sew seat covers. Everything else, Im game, dont have any machining equipment, limited there.
I have built many garages as well

 

Garage??? I wish I had a shade tree.... I'm more of a barn builder using what I can find to put things back together

 

40-50 hour work week, which has an additional 10 hours added on because I coach football & baseball at a local school. I do all my own wrenching, but this is my first car and I just don't have the tools I would need to do much more. I would love to build my own engines, and I'm working towards getting there. Tuning and any welding I have to outsource due to a lack of tools, knowledge, and experience.

 

Built the garage too.

- Spend way to much time at Work! (not enough on Hot Rod Projects)!
- Like to do "everything myself" and not Buy everything like on TV...
- Poor...Nah...Just Cheap i guess OR I want it Done My Way...!
