Hi, friends. I have a '54 Ford Crestline Victoria 239 Y block. The oil dipstick has been notched/altered so I'm a little confused on where my full line actually should be on the stick. How much oil does it take to have a proper amount? 5 quarts? I have the original style slip in canister filter. Thanks for any help.

Owner's Manual says "5 qt., 1 qt. extra with filter change"

thanks! I have an oil leak at the draft tube housing. My mechanic put in 5 quarts of oil and 1 qrt of lucas zinc. he said he also added some more oil. So my math has the car at close to 7 qrts. could that be why it's leaking?

Sounds like it is over filled... I'd try draining a quart out and see if the leak stops before tearing into the draft tube housing and filter ***y.

Perfect suggestion. I've been working thru so many gremlins with this car since I bought it. Thanks for the help!

you need a different mechanic to start with.the manual states the amount not keep adding until it runs out of fill tube

  7. Ive seen engines over full with the proper amount. because a quart of sludge is caked into the bottom of the oil pan.

Thanks, Old Wolf. I think i am ok with the sludge. I had my pan off recently and it wasn't an issue.

My dad used to run all his Mopar flathead sixes at the add mark. Stopped smoking, stopped leaking and lessened oil added between changes. If the engineers said add was a safe operating level why add more??? Cooling maybe in real hot climates???

  10. The 1954 Ford Victoria that I had when I was in the army just leaked oil all the time. I could never keep it full. I just had to keep adding oil.
