I got a great deal on a little two door 60 Ford Falcon. It's minus an engine and trans, but my brother-in-laws friend has a straight six and auto ****** that they pulled out of a running 62 that they said I could have. So I'm hoping to have a nice little daily driver/cruiser until I get my Poncho finished. Are there any tips or adivce any of you have for them? It's all stock inside and out. I'm thinking about doing it up to resemble this....
I had a shot to pick up one cheap, too, a '61 4dr that runs and goes. Was thinking about covering the grey primer with a $150 flat black paint job, and advertising it as a rat-rod and see if someone will give me $1200 for it, drive it around for a while in the meantime. Not sure I want to cruise around in one with the stock drivetrain, though, I don't know if they can get out of their own way or cruise the interstate at 70 or so without taxing the little motor in them.
http://tffn.net/phpBB2/index.php Ford Falcon News Forum http://fordsix.com/forum/ Ford Six Forum Both great sources of info and help for them. Also http://www.falconparts.com is a great source for odd little parts for them. Great little cars, and a lot of later mustang/maverick/fairmont/etc. drivetrain stuff swaps over to make them better.
With the stock 6 and 2 speed auto, they are very slow, and don't cruise down the highway very good (needs at least one more gear). The 3 on the tree, otoh, can keep up with highway traffic. Looks like I'm going to be replacing the 144 and 2 speed auto in my '61 sooner than I had planned, and am looking to upgrade to the later, bigger 6 and 3 speed.
Look up La Grasta on here, his Falcon is the best one i've seen. I've got a 200 inline in my Comet but with a c-4 behind it and it moves pretty good.
I like that -- 32 mpg . . . . those economy contests were pretty cool . . . too bad we didn't stick with them.
Thanks guys. I bookmarked those sites, good stuff! I wanted something that was good on gas, so I don't mind it being a little slow. Plus I wanted something that was easy to park and get around in. It's a cute car, it reminds me of my grandpas 60 something Dodge Dart, it's the same color and has the same color interior. (It's light blue with blue interior.) I'll probably look into geting a C4 or something to put behind it at a later date. Just so it'll do better in traffic, but I'm content to drive like a granny until then, lol!
My 1st (in 1969) car was a 1961 Falcon sedan delivery. I pulled the original 6 and 3spd and dropped(well, stuffed) a 240 & C6 into it. A 300 crank and head, Offy intake 600 cfm Holley, headers, healthy Crower cam, '67 Mustang suspension, etc... A torque monster! It ate 327s all weekend long and got 18-20 MPG on the hiway. The perfect sleeper. I'm building a similar set-up to go in my '59 F100. Gee, I miss that old Falcon....
getting ready to swap the 144 for a 200/C4/8"rear in this one in July... gathering parts as we speak. The stock drivetrain is reliable, but pokey, sluggish, and yeah - you don't want to try and keep up with the big boys on interstate or anything. But the little ****er will do 60mph for days on end.
Cool car! Looks kinda sad in the snow. I don't mind pokey, with gas prices in California, good gas milage is a plus!! It's one of the reasons I wanted a straight six car. Plus I have a thing for inline motors....... The guy who's giving me the six took it out to put a V8 in. He wants to make a drag car out of it. But I guess it ran around town fine before they pulled it, so hopefully I'll be cruising it next month! I'll post some pics when I bring it home this weekend.
I like that carton falcon its bad ***....post some pics would like to see the car ........thanks for sharing....
I just looked at my '60 Falcon "project" again today.. The 60 Grille is flat. In the illustration the grille makes the car, I believe that grille is a 61+. Your going to have to fish then.....
I did notice that the concept drawing grill is not the stock 60 grill. Any idea on what year that is? If I can't figure out/find that grill, maybe I'll try making a tube grill. But it's not a big deal, I'm going to enjoy the hell out of it the way it is!! Oh, it's on it's way here now, I'll post some pics either tonight or in the a.m.
Here's some pics of her. They aren't that great, but it gives you an idea of what I'm working with. I am in need of a hood, but I figure I can cruise around with-out one for now.....
It must be a site to see you drive that! My boss has a very clean '61 more door with a 170 and a fordomatic. I rode in it, it's kind of a dud. He reports 60 is about top speed for any distance, and this is with radials. I don't think he gets anywhere near 32 mpg either.
mine looks lifted compared to yours!!! dropped mine about 2.25" in the front and 2' in the back [/IMG]
Haring- that pic is awsome!!! I'm 6'1" (that's my booty in the first pic), so I know what you mean, but I'm skinny, so I fit pretty good. I am gonna drive it like it is for awhile. I didn't get any pics of the interior, but it looks really nice too.
Falcons rock! I'm 6'6" and used to (barely) fit in my 62 Wagon, but it was worth it everytime I drove it ......I'd cut some coils up front, blocks out back, weld up door handles ...possibly swap out the tailights for some huge *** red bullets, like 5 or 6" in diameter (not gay little 59 caddy ones in the centre) and that'd be it. Have fun Paul
my wagon cruises at 60 mph and that about it. but thats ok with with stock brakes i don't want to go any faster
i bet you had to grease up to get in i'm 6'1 and had to twist and turn to get into my wagon but not now. i put a set of 65 t-bird buckets in it and slid them back a little. It made a HUGE diffrence in driving the car [/IMG]
I love Falcons. Not to hijack this post, but has anybody put a T5 from a Mustang in one? That and a set of disc brakes behind 14 or 15 inch wheels and I'd be completely happy. -Dave
yes. when i did it though, i stuck in a 250 at the same time. i've taken it on two couple thousand mile round trips, very driveable with an OD ******. as for the disc brakes...they worked good enough to jam the waterpump pulley into the radiator in a panic stop. oops. on the seat business, i also moved my bench seat back 2" and i'm in the sub 6' category.
i got a 61 comet w/ a 144 2speed and i think it runs perty good for what it is runs better the my 83 ranger w/ a 2.3 did ut will even do a break stand some times but u dont like the high speeds i plan on driving it 30 mi round trip to work every day only 2nd day so far but i love it it dint handel or stop that well but thtas cool
