I know I can get the answer I want here so here it is.I had my car pin striped about 2 years ago.Great job by a guy that goes by the name Montana. My question is I want the same exact stripes but change color.Do I have to remove old stripes?Or can they just have the new color laid on top?It has not been clear coated over, just wax. Thanks,Dave

  2. Got photos? In theory it's possible.

I knew a striper named Montana once... he was from Philly I think. Hung out with a guy named Tex, from Seattle. :D

It would be harder to do it over the old stripe than take it off and redo.

Depends on who is doing it,and how complex the design is.

Definately won't save any money doing it this way,but it can be done.

  9. I believe the guy you are referring to is actually from Montana and travels around the country in a converted school bus. I met him in Marshall Michigan several years ago at their Back to the 50's show when Larry Ryder was hosting it. Nice guy and did some really nice work.

As to whether to remove or not, there are several things to consider:

First: In removing the stripes you may,"burn" into the base coat.
Second: It is possible to lay another color over the original design,BUT:
In order to effect total coverage of the old color, the stripes will of necessity be somewhat wider than original.
Some stripers are reluctant to go over other people's work.

If it were my car,I would probably just paint over the old stripes. If it were a customer's car,I probably wouldn't.

Hey WhiteStang....I don't know as much as some of these guys on here about pinstriping, but I wouldn't suggest striping over old stripes. It's a high pigment enamel, YES, but if it's yellow/white on a black base coat, You're gonna get a two-toned line when it's cured. I'd suggest getting it removed by a professional striper, and having it redone. There are ways to do it yourself, but if you're not familiar with it, then I wouldn't suggest it. Just my $0.02.

well the double line is going to be a ***** to paint over and have it look nice..but the rest should be easy enough to paint over. granted by easy enough i mean harder than doing it from scratch, but not impossible.

Take it to Montana, and let him take care of it.
Since you like his work,he should be able to make you happy.
