Why were the various different timing ***ociation (W.W.T.A., N.W.T.A., etc..) acronyms displayed on many of the car club plaques back in the day? Were they required to be on there for some reason? Anybody know why?
Racing like dry lakes and drag, started by using clocks for time between 2 spots for speed. Car clubs formed in timing ***ociations. The most famous and still going since forming 1937 is the SCTA, Southern California Timing ***ociation, of which I've been a member since 1974. The San Diego Roadster Club became a member club in 1941. I believe there are only few original member clubs.
The San Diego Timing ***ociation was a collection of car clubs in the fifties. They met once a month at the Pontiac dealer located at 16th and Broadway. Think there were about 20 clubs, most of which raced at the old Paradise Mesa strip.
I suppose it was done in an effort to give the club a bit of legitimacy and distance itself from any hoodlum element that may have existed. The timing ***ociations all promoted off-street/closed-track and the beginnings of safety regulations. Groups with large memberships have more muscle to accomplish things than individuals acting alone.
