I have had Porters on my sedan in the past and they sounded great at first as they get older they drone a LOT, I absolutely hated them. I guess that's why they make different mufflers, I can't stand the constant drone. I learned a long time ago everybody has their own idea of what sounds best and that's what THEY need to use on THEIR car or truck. HRP
I like Flowtech Raptor Turbo Mufflers. They are nice and mellow and when you get on it... https://www.summitracing.com/parts/big-50052flt
gotta be careful when you open the barn door - if motor is on the mild side 2 1/4" - 2 1/2" is plenty for pipe diameter- easier to bend to get over rearend, etc - all ready mentioned Walker, Magnaflow, etc turbos do the trick - had a set of blown out old gl*** packs on one of my rides and a gal said that it sounded evil (Ha!)
Sound is such a subjective thing. Personally, I like the sound of Flowmaster Delta 50's and have the exact same muffler is on both of my cars. They have similar CID but they sound much different due to variables such as cam, compression, etc... Behind a stock 350 with full 2.5" exhaust almost any large bodied, free flowing muffler will give you a deep tone. A crossover pipe will change the tone too. 440 with Mopar .509/292 cam, headers and full 2.5 exhaust with H-pipe and FM Delta 50's https://www.facebook.com/video.php?v=2169578109746325 454 BBC with Edelbrock RV cam, iron manifolds, full 2.5 exhaust with H-pipe and FM Delta 50's https://www.facebook.com/video.php?v=517766215365986
Have you considered chambered exhaust pipe like they used on the older corvettes. I believe pipes sells it in stick lengths. Sounds great. Midhr be a little loud. Mmmm I like it
Try the Brockman Mellowtones, give em a call and tell them what youe looking for sound wise. Made in the USA, good price killer sound. Heard em on a freinds 55 SBC Chevy, been hooked ever since. Sent from my SM-J727T1 using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
these give you an idea why different mufflers give out different sounds were on display by a muffler shop vendor - you might want to search on sites for muffler manufacturers to help you make your selection
Porters sound great but they are expensive. They are built though!! The Dynomax Super Turbo 17749 sound good once broken in but they are quiet until then. They sound best with out tail pipes.. I'm trying a pair of big 427 truck mufflers on my el Camino w/454. I'm not going to run tailpipes just like the trucks these mufflers are for didn't. I always liked the sound of those old dumps with the hood scoop that said Super Duty.. I'm going to try Walker 17197. Its a big moma though!!
Gl*** packs will make a high pitch / tinny sound. You need a steel Packed muffler to get you a low deep tone. I would go with Porter Mufflers.
You need a half inch arm in the 350 to give it deep tone to me. I feel it's the cubic inches for a deep sound you want. All the examples have different lengths, bends, sizes, cams, compression, etc so it's hard to do...Good Luck
I agree with most that what sounds good to one might not to another. If you want to save money try a set of 20 - 22 dollar a piece gl*** pack Thrush I think they are. I put a pair on my old pick up pretty much stock 350, 2 1/2" pipes. Sounds pretty good to me so I left them on, and for about $40 that's a win.
There are times when it's necessary or at least wise to keep the decibels down somewhat. Steel pacs seem to work well for this. They open when getting on it, but have a "just right" rumble otherwise. I mean, of course they are probably too loud for the wine and brie crowd no matter what... but you know what I mean.
I found that playing with tailpipe diameter AFTER the muffler can make quite a difference also. On my 71 dodge shop truck, I ran 2 1/2 to a pair of dynomax turbos, then 3 inch to the rear bumper. Bone stock 360 mopar, almost cant hear it inside the cab, but deep mellow tone outside.
I have porters on my 40, my 61 impala, my 61 vette and my off topic 66 ss396 chevelle. they are wonderful mufflers with absolutely zero droning are semi quiet at idle and bark when you jump on it. also they are built like a brick **** house. they are the last mufflers you will ever buy. Invented in 1931 and still made by hand the same way today
^^^I just bought a pair of polished SS Porters, I think they are 26" long? for the truck I am building. I am running 2.250" pipes behind the little Desoto hemi and I think these things are going to sound sweet. It is amazing how bigger pipes change the sound of the same brand mufflers. I also am adding a couple of cool side pipe cutouts I picked up form someone on here in my internet travels.
