1952-59 Ford Radio conversion

Discussion in 'Off Topic Hot Rods & Customs' started by DrDragon, Dec 20, 2019.

  1. Did a quick search. Seems radio conversions have gone way up in price and some places are no longer in business. I'd like my 58 to have bluetooth and usb. Any suggestions.

Only that if you're going to have to go to one of those dreaded "new" radios, check marine bluetooth radios. There are more options as far as colors and shapes. I've got one in my '57, but my interior is much more modern that most. I was able to find a silverish color that at least works a little better than the black. I keep the manual handy in the glove box in case I need to actally figure out how to tune it to a radio station. GGGGRRRR!!! Someday I hope to find a modern radio with just a few knobs like they actually put in all the new cars. I never understood why all the aftermarket manufacturers feel it neccesary to make them with soooo many multi-multi function ****ons with tiny letters you can't posibly read while you're driving.
OK....you've obviously touched on one of my pet peeves. I'm done with my rant.

why not go buy a new radio with all the bells and whistles for $100 and replace the useless boat anchor currently installed? judging by your avatar, your car has some customization and modifications. why stop at the radio? are you going to put back the original exhaust, wheels, suspension, engine components? did you ever hear anybody walk up to a cl***ic car and say "yeah, the custom paint looks great, the incorporation of the new FI stroker looks perfect, the custom gauges are cool, but what really makes this car stand out is the factory radio still in the dash". or all of that and "but he really screwed up with replacing the oe radio with a modern day kenwood"

  5. I did. I bought a new radio with bells and whistles...Came with a manual 1/4" thick. more complicated than what a woman wants. Couldn't get it to work. So I'll look for another $100 radio that's less complicated.

I had a fellow in Costa Mesa California convert my stock radio to AM-FM Blue Tooth and bought Sirus Radio for my I-Phone so I could live in the 50's-60's again when driving. EZ to operate and the inner unit was about the size of a cigarette pack. The only change from the outside when it's on is a single light which changes depending which mode its in. Expensive but for me well worth it.

Haha....Squire g: I was trying to think of a good ****ogy, but all I could come up with was ...I don't want a flush toilet in my outhouse.
I'm probably the last person you would guess would have a problem with a modernization, but the new radios just don't flow well in a stock dash. Mostly because of the mainly black, but as I said, I'd sure like to find something from a newer car that would work rather than the aftermarket radios. I don't have a problem with the radio in any of my dd's, it's just that they are built into the dash panels and can't be retrofitted into a car it wasn't meant for......at least that I've found so far.
If I had a somewhat stock dash, I'd probably look into leaving the non-functioning radio in place and installing a new unit under the seat, with a remote.
Just a different opinion. I'm the last one that wants to open a discussion on what looks out of place on our 50's cars.

i am happy to just have a radio with 2 knobs and none of the other million functions that i am sure nobody plays with. i have one of the more "modern" units in one of my rods and hardly ever use it....when i do,usually when i'm driving and go to change stations is when i hit a bump at the same time which causes me to bump the knob thereby changing the function.....so then i have to pullover to workout how to get back to where i was.
nah....just a radio with 2 knobs is fine...........i suppose i should mention i'm nearly deaf anyway so good sound is wasted on me.:(
