alternator, a/c and an s-10 rearend

  1. on the yoke of my s-10 rear, there is this giant steel donut. i figure it's for balancing, but i don't really know.

my question is, do you guys think i could machine a v-groove in this sucker and drive some accessories with it? i know they would be useless at a stand still, but i plan on moving more than i'm stopped! would this hurt an a/c compressor?
i've seen cars with driveshaft driven alternators, so wouldn't this be kinda the same?
i could build mounts and put my alt. and a/c comp on the axle so it travels together and all this would be hidden under the bed, and would really clean up the motor and possibly allow a clean a/c install.

    could this work?

Wouldn't it be moving with the diff, and unless you mounted the A/C to it aswell you would have trouble with the belt because of the pump being fixed to the body or chassis?

  3. Driving something off the pinion yoke is nothing new. All Nextel cup cars run a pump for the rearend off the pinion. 2 problems with your setup: The balance ring is rubber mounted and might slip or shake the belt off, and the Chevy rear end is kinda difficult to mount something off of. The 9" Fords used in the cup cars have the bolt flange on the front side, not the back. No reason it shouldn't work though. Remember that when you're sitting still, the A/C won't be working....

I may be wrong but the AC might not work due to the clutches in the comp. Have you ever noticed that when you turn the AC off the RPMs drop. Is this due to the comp needing a minimum RPM? If so the AC would only work at speed, this may be hard on the clutch. Like I said though, I may be wrong. It would be cool if you can get it to work, having the AC outa sight.

I thought that's why they called 'em "hot" rods?!?!? :D

  7. I have to ask. Do you really want your compressor and alternator stopping, starting and even running backwards periodically?

You will also want to make sure you do not use a one wire alternator. The turn on speed will be hard to reach with a one wire piece.

I have a friend who used to run the air and alt. off the driveshaft in a 48 Morris Minor. He ran flat belts and pulleys off the driveshaft not the yoke.
He never had a problem with the car this way.

  10. running the alternator backwards wouldn't matter...it will charge either way

running the compressor backwards...i don't know.

  11. The compressor would probably have to have a reverse lockout so the clutch wouldn't engage.
