Projects Project car "deal breaker"

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by 40FORDPU, Dec 22, 2019.

  1. ***le.I would rather have a clean piece of paper, and no car than a car with no paper. Rare cars that are missing a key part.A Chrysler air flow missing the grill is a deadend. No low price will make up for the fact your going to spend the rest of your life searching for one.

  2. I have walked away from deals that would be terrific, except the sellers were total jerks....obnoxious, condescending, arrogant......you know the types. I do not do business (buy or sell) with people like that.......no matter how good the deal is.......personal principles......

  3. If there's no CLEAN ***le, it ends before it begins. If the ***le is good, body rot is about the only thing I don't want to deal with. I do prefer not to have to listen to B.S.

Kinda funny, I posted a thread about a no ***le, gunshot, rusted and stripped 33 Plymouth coupe on here, asking what it was worth, according to most who responded, it was supposedly worth the 4500 asking price. I felt $500 was top dollar and I p***ed

  5. The only deal breaker for me is if the seller won't take my offer. If I've gotten that far it means what i'm looking at I want. I know the minute I set eyes on something I either want it or I don't. No ***le is no problem with me, I even use it as a way to get the price lowered. I can, and have, always found very simple ways around that. If the seller is a jerk, I just make sure I turn the screws a little tighter during the haggling process. My thinking is pretty simple. Used/old cars need fixing. Whether I buy it broke, or break it myself, it's still gonna have to be fixed.

I drove 60 miles to see a "very nice" according to the seller, pickup. I arrived a bit earlier than expectedUpon.
walking up to the vehicle the owner was under the right side of the thing with it jacked up and a cracker box welding machine sitting there. The leads were under the car with the guys upper torso. I said, " hey man whats up under there? Apparently he thought it was his neighbor who was speaking! He stated "I am trying to weld up this starter problem before this guy gets here"
I told him "too late man" He was out from under there
and started telling me about how all it needed was a
little tack to secure the broken casting that supports the
chevy two bolt type hanging starter. I coached him on
how difficult it would be to make a proper repair on an
oil soaked cast iron block. He ***ured me it would not be an issue. I told him no thanks and left. A day or so later he called and said he fixed it and did I still want to deal. I p***ed.

Don’t have to worry about ***les here, so that doesn’t matter to me. Plenty of folks here in state to buy something without a ***le the rest of you guys would p*** on.
Rust depends on the vehicle, and how much. If it’s a popular model and patch panels are available, I would look more closely than I would at an orphan brand that nobody makes anything for. I got lucky on my car, only a couple of small rusty areas that will be easy to make a piece for.

Looking at that last project I drug 300 miles to home, I'm going to say there isn't much that would be a deal breaker for me. It did, however have a good State issued ***le.
I think the deal breaker for me would be a missing serial number. A missing serial number coupled with no ***le will kill the deal. With an out of state ***le, IL will require a serial number inspection. If the ***le is from IL, they may or may not require that serial number inspection. If the ***le and the serial numbers don't match up, you could have a whole bunch of problems. For some vehicles, replacement serial number plates are available if you have a ***le in hand, in your name, but the State won't issue a ***le without a matching serial number. Unless of course you can do a builder ***le, which has lots of hoops to jump through. Gene

Need a ***le and no rust. Rust repair is too time consuming. The 60 Pontiac in my avatar has never had any rust repairs as it didn't need any.

I drove 22 hrs to New Mexico to buy a rust free truck from the desert only to find an ex-navy truck that had 1/4 inch tread plate floors, bullet holes and no VIN tag.

Drove 3 hours once to see a POS 57 Chevy Handyman wagon. Vowed never again would I drive any long distance to see a POS. If I can't see a car locally or at a show I'm attending I don't need it.

    Nothing.

I seem to drag home even the most roached out stuff. One look around my place and you'll believe me.

Too much rust or just too big of a project are my deal breakers. I know lots of you say ***le, but I have bought lots of cars with no ***le and then got them registered. So far, that hasn’t ever caused me a problem but I also pay accordingly in case it ends up a parts car if there is a problem.

If the price is right, I'll buy anything.

I'm a much better welder than I am a mechanic, so stuff that runs and drives gets a huge premium from me over stuff that needs welding, I am not afraid of fixing rust if the price is right. Apparently I'm in the minority there.

My biggest deal breakers seem to be distance, and stuff that's all taken apart. I once had a guy offer me a '56 Oldsmobile I would have been interested in, but his son-in-law had completely dis***embled it, and the seller thought that added value to the car, since it was already apart and "ready for restoration". To me, half finished equals half price.

  15. Yep,
because when you gut it to chop out floor pans, put in a tube ch***is, rearrange quarters, stretch fenders and toss the dash, use lexan windows, then it’s best to have a pile good stuff to sell off :p:D

Misrepresentation is what burn's my ***...... I ask specific questions more than once, question all pictures, and yet I still spot things within minutes that I've asked about........ These are BOTH car/non car people.
I get the non's, BUT- those who claim to be "car guys", Man- what a waste of time, and I surely say so......
I try to leave them speechless, or lead them up to the magic sale, but then say no thanks.........
Payback for lying and wasting my time. Some of the looks/reactions are golden!

Or....when you do all that, you don't want to also spend a month fixing the old sheet metal that you will be using. btdt.

    Inability to get it registered.

The equivalent of a '***le' for you guys, appears harder to obtain in my country.
If you change a certain % of parts, the list of hoops & regulations changes dramatically.
Some people think they can put a certain engine in a car & its suddenly worth more. Wrong.
Even if they do an amazing job of that, not a snowballs chance of getting it legal for various reasons..

Rust isn't a major problem for me. I normally use the rustiest just to offend old grumpy men that turn their nose up at rust.

Hey RJP, That's EXACTLY how I look at the art of the deal ! ! ! I do what I can to get the deal I want...if it all works out, great. If not, I move on. And if the universe determines that I'm "meant" to have a certain car, I'll end up with it...and that has happened several times when the owner calls back after I have walked:D

Not having a clean, in-state ***le is a deal killer; followed by rust... I've learned that by bad experience. No room for anything else now; so probably no more projects for me.

Three things would stop me: No ***le, excessive rust, missing windshields and/or back gl*** if it is not reproduced or common enough to be easy to find.
