Brakes

Discussion in 'The Antiquated' started by WastedYouth666, Jan 4, 2020.

  1. Can the switch on a proportioning valve be replaced to operate the brake lights? I have several valves laying around from different vehicles that I can use. They are off vehicles with drum/drum system. I wanna use them on a 36 ford pickup trying to save money.

I wouldn't do that. You want a normally open switch. You can get them Amazon, eBay, any auto parts store. Here's one style. Google "universal brake light switch ".
    They're not expensive, about $15.[IMG]

  3. Ok cool deal. I have something like that off a motorcycle (had it laying around). Just thought the fluid pressure switch might work a little better.

  4. The fluid pressure switches suck

Mount a switch off your brake pedal much more reliable

  5. Yeah that’s what I’ve got. I was just curious if it would work.

    Removal and Installation
    1. Detach the brake light switch electrical connector.
    2. Loosen the locknut.
    3. Remove the brake light switch by unthreading it in a counter-clockwise direction.
    4. Thread the brake light switch into its mounting bracket until the threaded end of the switch contacts the pad on the brake pedal. The switch plunger should be fully depressed and not visible at this time.
    5. Back off the switch one quarter turn to allow 0.01 in (0.30mm) of clearance between the threaded portion of the switch and the pedal pad.
    6. Attach the brake light switch electrical connector.
    7. Connect the negative battery cable.
