Technical Unique air cleaners...

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by rustydusty, Jan 15, 2020.

  1. Borrowed an idea from "Jimmy six" in the "brake drum air cleaner" thread, and rather than continuing to hijack that thread, decided to post it here. After I saw the air cleaners on his car, I realized that was the look I was going for. I ordered an 11" stainless cake pan and a 9" filter. I already had a 9" base. Then I drilled and tapped an extra valve cover wing nut I had which 20200115_132721.jpg finished off the look. I like the clean and simple design without an exposed air filter element.

What's wrong with having your element exposed?

  5. Thanks for the compliments. Nothing is wrong with having it exposed, just wanted something different, that didn't just come off a shelf.

Sometimes you just can’t find a different air cleaner. Really is a statement piece. Should start a thread on this subject

Man, that’s pretty damn cool. Another benefit is that it will help keep rain out of the filter in a hoodless car.

And other kind of dirt etc. is less likely to get all the way up to the filter, anything heavier than air prefers to fall down, not rise up. The first step to making the filter work well and for a long time is trying to keep dirt etc. from getting to the filter.

That actually looks great and should work ok. Helluva lot better than the brake drum, valve cover or mailbox treatment.
Now just weld a 1/4” stud to the top of the headers and with some aluminum foil as a cover you could bake biscuits while you drive to an event.

Cool, the best part is that it actually looks like a custom air cleaner top and not something that was stuck on there for effect. Very clean and simple.
I'd bet that the first time you take it out and play show and tell you will have a few old farts saying that they had one just like that that they bought from a speed shop back in the day. I wouldn't tell them any different.

The above cake pan actually does look good.
BUT, I'd really hate to be sucking up all of that hot engine air (open front end and all) into the carburetor.

rustydusty, you need to change your handle now to "Cake Pan". But seriously, hands down a lot better than a "brake drum". I vote OK for re-purposing a cake pan into an air cleaner. Maybe drill a series of holes in the sides? I am Butch/56sedandelivery.
