Look like a cool piece but, it'll coat a real fortune to have some machine it ( unless you have the resources to do it yourself ). I have a friend who bought a rough cast aluminum RAMAIR V block. He had a HELL of a time getting it machined...it didn't have any indexing holes...
$5000...wonder what the cost of actually being able to use it is,,or will someone just hide it away and sell for more down the road
I love me some Pontiacs. If I had the "extra" scratch laying around, I'd own it just to say that I did. Investment wise its a good deal. Use it? Never.
My guess why that block was never machined and finished is because is was not up to task. It even looks weaker than the iron blocks of the time. Based on all that, I think it was a reject. Here is the alum V block I am working on. It is a much beefier design. I bought it as a raw casting with only a cam hole. built all the tooling to do it. So far the mains are in, align bored, oil pan bolts, timing cover and bellhousing. Still have to do the lifters, cyl bores, dist hole. New aluminum Pontiac blocks are under 5k , machined. Someone really wanted this one pretty bad. I would never put this in the Tempest sd racecar that was just sold recently, it would be worth alot more with a correct sd 421.
Steve, Is that a main girdle on your block - was that provided with the block? Any more info out on the net about this piece? EDIT: After looking on your site a little more - this is probably a custom piece you machined. Thanks, Neil
Neil, I bought the block raw, in a similar condition as the one on ebay. I did all the work ( or had it done to my specs). I also desigined and had built this 6 bolt main lower end the ties all mains together and uses crossbolts. I have 3 of these lower ends. I am now comtemplating selling this block. It would be without the main assembly. I bought this block in 2000 when there was no other option at the time. It was destined for my AA/Fueler dragster. since then, other options have materalized including to 2 block forgings I had made. , The forgings are better suited to my needs. There were two of the early 59-60 M/T aluminum blocks in Hemmings 12-13 years ago. They had Iron liners in the bores, neither was fully machined, and one had the liners "stuck" half way in. I put money on them after working a deal but the guy kept changing the deal, and claimed he had higher offers. Dude, ripped me off pretty good, if I ever make it out to California this the first person I'm going to look up.
