Patina? I prefer weathered. Anywho, I re did the firewall when the engine was out. One day I’ll re-prime the whole thing. To quote my Uncle “It IS painted”. Sent from my iPhone using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
Correct. I had some matched to my '55 Packard and it was so far off it was comical, I should have just looked at a bunch of paint chips until I found one suitably close, like I've done in the past. The scan I had done at the hardware store for some exterior latex was a perfect match, I wish the auto paint store had that system.
Hardware store ones work on the same concept I believe. I have had some that match perfect and some that aren't even close at hardware stores as well.
the fancy paint matching stuff at the paint store was not created so we could match 50 year old paint and spray it through a Binks #7 its created to get you the quickest blendable match to fix your late model ride.
I have had some good matches and some not so good with color scanning. I would not expect or need a perfect match in this case. Just something in the ball park. It will look repainted no matter what is done to it. Unless you have a patina artist do the paint. I might even find a can of Dupli-color that was close and be ok with that. But I am a guy that likes nice driver cars. Something that looks like a nice 10 year old car, not a show car.
I got a Mercedes paint code when we scanned the color for the Packard, at the hardware store, after the match, the hardware guy saved a copy of the mix ratios for the paint he made for me and put my name on it in his computer in case I wanted more. I could be wrong but I'm pretty sure that was a custom mix, otherwise he could have just given me a paint code like the auto paint place did.
Any of you guys ever do spray out cards with different air pressures? You can shoot out of the same can and adjust air pressure and cause a difference in color. Any who, this is a firewall, not the door. The firewall is 90 degrees with the body. A shade or two off want matter. The gloss level would be more important.
How about removing all the paint, put some salt water in a pump bottle, spray it, and let it sit out side for a few weeks coating it with salt spray every other day. In a month you’ll have it.
Perfect time to give it a proper paint job. Even if it’s just the firewall for now. ( Can’t believe how many patina fans on here though ! )
No fake "Patina" here... just 75,490.4 original miles over 69 years of weathering on North Dakota farms. Under the hood I just wiped off the light film of dirt/dust and rubbed in a little wax its the same on most of the underside of the fenders. I wouldn't mind leaving it like it is but the truck now lives in Oregon....then it would just be a old rusty truck. Sent from my SM-T387V using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
If you paint it maroon, if anything make it a shade darker than the body.....as the exterior would be exposed to the sun more and would end up being a shade lighter.
I like the "match the wheels" idea. Give it a custom look that will be easy to do. After a week of driving the oil vapours and whatnot will give it a weathered look, if you don't keep it too clean. Nice car btw
I was gonna say just clean it and leave it. ^^^^^ if it is bare metal someplace brush a little Rustoleum on it something close to the same color, knock it down after it dries with a piece of 00 steel wool. other than the steel wool that is what would have been done way back when. The steel wool is just so it don't become a shiner on an otherwise sweet face.
