Plan to put my 312 in my 30 coupe and have a firewall question. My coupe is on a boxed original frame and I was wondering if any firewall modification is necessary to clear the y block. I’m not running a hood or fenders so there’s no issues there. I hate to cut up a nice firewall off I don’t have to. I’ve seen them flipped around for clearance and I’m willing to do that. Any help and pics would be appreciated. Sent from my iPhone using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
I started with a stock '30 frame and stretched it 4 or 5" to get a Y block in, I did not want to cut the firewall. You may be able to get it in with just flipping the firewall. I have a sedan and did not want to give up the rear seats so inside space was something I did not want to give up. it may help to mount the motor low in the frame to gain some room with the bell housing.
One built by a fellow Hamb'er... https://www.whichcar.com.au/features/ford-y-block-1930-model-a-tudor-sedan-tim-mcmaster
Yeah I’ve read up on Tim’s car but from what I’ve read he put a new firewall in but not sure if he stretched the frame or not. Sent from my iPhone using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
Mummert offers a timing cover when used with a shortend pan and a reworked Chevy damper will knock off 1 1/2 inches. It also requires an electric fuel pump. https://images.search.yahoo.com/search/images;_ylt=AwrEzerE4DVeBs4AJHRXNyoA;_ylu=X3oDMTEybWtkYTNzBGNvbG8DYmYxBHBvcwMyBHZ0aWQDQjkzMThfMQRzZWMDc2M-?p=y+block+ford+dimensions&fr=yfp-t#id=70&iurl=https://st.hotrod.com/uploads/sites/21/2017/01/vintage-y-block-fuel-injection-daily-driver-01a.jpg&action=click
Tim's sedan is on a boling brother model a style frame that has been stretched to fit the y block. If I'm not mistaken the only thing needed to clear the distributor is the flange on the firewall needed to be notched. Boling bro did a stock frame coupe with a y block not that long ago its a blue Patina coupe. they had to make a recessed firewall to clear the back of the engine and distributor.
This is good!! I have a 29 coupe I hope to make it Y-block powered. Have the Offy -3x2 and valve covers, but no engine yet.
I would think it would fit with an advertised length of 29 inches, but you’ll have to mock it up to be sure. If you do end up flipping the firewall it’s a fun project and gains a bunch of room. John
