Just bought a Saginaw 4 speed. I know I know they are boat anchors (not before 500 HP) I have noticed that it didn't want to go into reverse unless I pull out on the shift arm about 1/8th of an inch, seems to help the ball engage easier I suppose. How does the shifter do this when it is installed? Or is it not supposed to work that way? Is there some kind of spacer I am missing? Any help would be appreciated. I'm sure this has already been asked but I am very new and don't know how to search for threads. Any help would be greatly appreciated thx guys and gals.
You are talking about the trans levers? Sags do just fine with 2:56 1st. Not! 3:50 that many make a mistake with.
Yes. For the reverse one( furthest to the right) to get it to engage ( while it is installed, cover booted down) I have to pull out on it then enguage it. From your pic there isn't anything missing. Is it supposed to work this way?
Vertical portion of reverse lever shown in photo I posted earlier has to be hitting reverse slider gear (lower right). But no, it shouldn't act that way. Do you have the correct external arm with slot so lever key fits thru it?
So, I went and picked up this trans last night. I couldn't get reverse to shift. Took the cover off and took a look inside, took note of how everything went together. When actuating the reverse shift selector, I noticed that the ball wanted to roll off of the spring when the selector was rotated. So I pressed down on it so the ball was more firmly cradled in the spring and it moved as I thought it should. The ***ymbly( as I noted it last night) was spring inside of retainer hole, then the ball( nothing holding it in but the shift selector Arm where the groves for the ball to rest in n and r are) then the shift selector. Does that sound right?
