  1. Got the bronze Shutzenschnur while stationed in Neu Ulm in 1974. At that time it could only be worn while you were stationed in the BRD. Still got it somewhere.

I'm just venturing a guess, but I'm betting that Ed Roth helped popularize the Maltese Cross in hot rod culture.. As most of you know, he hung out with the Hells Angels who are big into any "FTW" stuff to piss off the citizens. 'Bout all that I CAN tell you for certain is that they were the "in thing" to wera on a chain around your neck when I went to high school in the mid '60s.

Jung did not write that book...... it was written by his students after his death.
I agree, it does reveal his work & thinking & in my opinion is one of the most important books ever published.
His "discovery " of the collective conciousness & cellular memory explains the importance & function of DNA long before anybody knew DNA existed.

Fascinating shit. I watched a Discovery channel doc about some mummies from the far east that dated like 5-6000 BC. Funny thing is that they were red haired and fair haired, well over 6' tall and some had what looked to be oriental/caucaisan wives. The narrators and scientists were theorizng who were these people and where did they come from. The cloth samples had led them to believe it was woven wool in a distinct pattern, different for some of the mummies. What I wondered about was why they never made the connection to the ancient Scot/Irish from those early days. The mat'l was clearly a tartan and the Gaelic language has foundations of dialect from the far east and india. Goes very well with the barbarian/aryan explaination you posted. Some went back, some stayed on. I stated earlier my ancestors were pirates. Highlanders from the Isle of Barra. They allied themselves with the Norse for a while and went out pillaging all around the northern hemisphere. When the Norse became a nuisance they asked our clan to rid Scotland of the Norsemen in return they'd get their lands back and some of the prisoners freed. I'm not being ultra specific here, and severely generalizing.

What does this have to do with the topic? Prolly not a fuckin thing:D Except for the skull thing mentioned earlier. And it is fascinating doncha think?

Crusaders, that's something to be proud of. So the Maltese cross means you're proud of your baby-eating Christian heritage?

    anyway...
Lot's of good info here. I've talked about this before with people, but it usually goes south pretty quick.

Of course, we all agree that 99% of the people displaying the Iron Crosses, and Swastikas are ignorant followers.

Even the people who do know what they mean are representing a bastardized symbol of history.

It doesn't mean shit to me anymore. It's just something people fly to look cool, or to represent 60's car culture, etc. I think it's great that the cross has become a mainstream icon that soccer moms slap on their SUV's. That must really piss off the hardcore people who think it still means anything.

  15. Rome also had a corrupt politicians and fed christians to the lions. At least no one is feeding the lions anymore... :p

  16. It was a quote from one of the links.

  17. To me it represents being down with thems that wear pointy hats in Rome.
    Which I ain't.

  18. Your welcome.
However most of the credit goes to google.

I just like to give the links and quotes. This way if a person can not figure it out for themselves, They will never figure it out...

Of course, I didn't think you talked like that, I hope :D

  21. Now when did the connection between "death" symbols and 'rodding begin? You know, skulls, skeletons, coffins, and/or the devil?

Just as you see these as mainstream, I don't see very many people painting Christian crosses on their rods. Not that I would either, just an observation.

China's gov won't even let National Geographic mess with some remains that were pretty much mummies that were found in western China that appear to be European.

In western China people turn up with red hair, green eyes, and various other unusual traits.

China has always been very xenophobic and ignores any chance of western incursion into Asia.

The funny thing is now people are actually paying attention to the reverse situation where China sent out explorers themselves and returned home with the view that the world is full of barbarians, lets just stay here.

As for the Little Deuce Coupe, I think it was explained as something he just did not really giving it that much thought and he himself later took off.

Maybe it was just one of those things?

(referring to the iron cross and the comments below) When, where and who of that time period is the same as any other - some dude with alot of attitude and alot of "cool" slipped some symbol on his shirt or rolled a pack of cigs up in his shirt sleeve or tipped his hat a certain way and decided it looked cool. It fit his image. That right cut of pants. That right roll of the cuff. It just happened. Some guy looked in a mirror and got overwhelmed by a feeling. Then some other guy saw him and got impressed and followed suit. Same way car rear ends got jacked up during one generation and sat on the ground in another. Just an attitude. Same thing everyone else here is trying to do with each and every one of their cars.

You most likely will not find that one person that first displayed the iron cross during that one era. But it makes me wonder what the "iron cross" of today will be. Even if it isn't one of the major defining symbols of what this time periods hot rodding will be known for. What has each and every one of you done to "push" your hotrodding style. Is that even an important element of why your involved?

I hope more people than not are involved for that reason. To create something original out of thin air. Originality, design, cool - are all things that are priceless - yet cost nothing. A power every man has.

I have alot more respect for someone trying to build a new style of pre-65 custom or rod that's never been seen before. Than another replica of a car built by someone trying to send the message - "build something new - build something different". Otherwise the message is lost.

As Independent Truck company says it: If the Pope can wear a maltese cross it cant be too bad. Yes the catolic church uses it too.
The Zwastika was used by the Vikings also. Hitlers art department stole strong symbols from a lot of cultures.

Great answer. I first saw the iron cross symbol associated with the California surf community in the early sixties. And as a kid we didn't know much about Nazi-izm, but we knew the Germans were tough and had some wicked cool uniforms.

I'm sure that had we known what the Stormtroopers had been up to, we wouldn't have put the SS symbol on our skateboards.

Like I said we were kids.
