Does anyone know if a ford 48-52 F1 steering box is any different from a ford F5 steering box. They look identical to me but are the guts any different? Thanks

    I believe F5s are bigger.
I believe the F1,F2,F3s are the same size.

The F-4 and up box is physically bigger, pitman arm is bigger/longer, and the ratio(turns lock to lock) is much slower.

From what I understand, F1 - F3 on left, F4 and up on right.

As @Lloyd's paint & gl*** said, your first pic looks to be F1. But the scale can be difficult to determine in a close up. A quick way to be sure is flip your box over and look at the cast extrusion (or whatever it's called) on the bottom; see ovals in this picture (these boxes are lying upside down):

On the F1, F2 and F3 box (left), the extrusion is a square. On the F4, F5 box (right) it's more of a t****zoid. So if you've got a square, you've got an F1 box.

The internals are the same, F1, F2, F3. If you go to the Mac's site you'll see that bushings, bearings and worm gear are all labeled as fitting "F1, F2, F3."

...man, squares and ovals and t****zoids. It's like I'm back in high school goemetry, but with no cute girls to look at... well, except for Lloyd's avatar...:D

1 last question. What is the difference between a 53-55 box compared to a 48-52 box?

F-1 48-52 the steering shaft comes out of the bottom of the box. The F-100 I believe comes out of the top.

My last model A i used a F-100 box/ column, once it was all done and on the ground i realized the steering box was bad, i think i screwed it up welding the mount, but i replaced it with an F-1, bolted right in. And my avatar is cute, but it's hard to see me for that damn woman in the way :D

Lots of difference on internal measurements, but from a quicky outside look the F1 48-52 has the worm shaft come out low and a big nut to hold the pitman to the sector. An F-100 53-56 has the worm shaft come out above and a pinch bolt to hold the pitman to the sector.

Yes either should if placed so they clear all the pedals, engine, and exhaust.

And just to throw some additional info out there, 53-56 F-100 and 57-60 F-100 boxes are the same. The difference is the pitman arm on 57-60 uses the tapered tie rod end style connection, and the 53-56 box uses the old style ball and socket. Both 53-56 and 57-60 use the pinch bolt pitman arm and you can interchange the pitman arms. Not that 57-60 trucks are all over the junkyards, but certainly seem to be easier to find than the 53-56 trucks.
Back to the original question, which has already been answered, i can confirm the F-4 and up are a larger box. My COE (technically an F-6) had the larger box, and being COE the column was extra long.
