Memphis (not really, its from a song by the Colorblind James Experience). The wife and I are thinking about moving from San Diego Top on the list are Austin TX, Portland OR and Somewhere around Tempe AZ. - Any input? I know that there are a bunch of you guys around AZ and TX, plus the hot rod scene is pretty good in both states Top on the wives list is Portland. Any one from OR on the list? Also, whats the job market like? I'm a Pro-Geek (I'm currently Sys Admin for a construction co). Thanks. - Joe
Check out St. George Utah. The scenery is beautiful, the people .. well most of them are friendly, the weather is great year round, we are only an hour and a half to las vegas and we need more hotrodders. and there is still some old tin around, i could show you where there is a 32 ford tudor still sitting on the original ch***is and is complete down to the gauges!
I went to Austin, TX once... It was miserably hot. It was a pretty cool city, thats where they just held the lonestar roundup if im not mistaken. check this months R&C. I dont really know what the job market is like there but if you're in construction I wouldn't want to be out there in the sun all day, go to Oregon. You cant lose in either place if you like college football. I'm glad we had this relevant talk about cars. haha good luck with the move!
- Yeah, the I know that the 'Roundup is in Austin... and I'm not out there swinging a hammer, I spend all day in air-conditioning on my *** in front of a computer... Or in the freezer with the servers. (haha) - Joe
Portland OR. has a *****in Hot rod scene. Lots of old timers that still have their cars from back in the day. Old school was cool when it wasn't cool, because it never went away. BUT, it rains all the ****ing time. I lived there for 1 year, I think we had two weeks of nice weather, not all at the same time. I like to visit, wouldn't live there again. My dream was Arizona, but I like the heat. 114 deg. love it. I used to vacation in Phoenix twice a year. Now I'm in Missouri, and I'm happy here. I'd try TX, or AZ. Dean
Yea.. what he said, i rains all the time here . You wouldn't like it at all... ah heck, I see your from California, but your into cars so you must be kool. I travel all over the country, and I like it here the best. Summers are around 80, with lots of cruze nights & car shows. Winters are mildly wet, with no snow. Eric
I'm building a deuce just outside of Portland. Cool town. Lot of rods and the raceway is hopping once a week. Great radio stations and the youngest strippers west of the Atlantic. Killer Roadster Show and a still useful swapmeet every year. Good luck!
Portland. It doesn't really rain all year, its more like a heavy mist all year - a really heavy mist. Great music scene in Austin but its . . . well, its . . . Texas. ;-) Portland does have the GREATEST strippers anywhere in the planet.
I've traveled all over this fine land as well and I have to say there are three places I've been which are on my list when they finally kick me out of Oklahoma... Tampa, FL Spokane, WA and yes, Portland, OR. Sorry Texas brothers but reality tweaks just South of the Red River.... You could always move to Tulsa, 10 hours to the Roundup and 10 hours to the Pileup... To get any closer to the middle of the two you'd have to live in Arkansas and we can't let that happen....
You are absolutely right, south of the Red River does "tweak" but up here in the Panhandle its not too bad......if you like hot summers, cold-*** winters with the possibility of blizzards and ice. but mostly its just hot, flat, dry, and oh yea, did I mention the wind Good luck on the move Vance
I live in phx, a Tempe suburb. Lots of computer work out here. Hot in the summer but you barely need a jacket in the winter. Year round car events! jerry
I need to visit AZ sometime. The closest I've come was connecting a flight in Phoenix on my way back from Riverside or Long Beach or Diego. Hell, I don't remember. One benifit to AZ would certainly be living near THE Jerry. A heckuva guy, if you don't have to try and sleep in the same room with him.
If your a Demoso******t liberal, and love the state run scene, Oregon and Washington are for you. Try have been tyring to outlaw old cars for some time now.
I grew up in California, but I did live in WA state only a few hours from Portland and it really is a cool city, it would be at the top of my list too, the wife and I went to the round up this year and we thought Austin was great, we want to move there in the fall. I guess my top three places would be Ventura, Ca if I could afford it, then Austin and then somewhere in the Pacific nothewest area.
Moved to Florida 5 years ago to work for proffessional sports car team. First 3 years had the privilage of not only travelling all over God's green earth, but driving through most of this beautiful country. Hard to say which is best but as a midwesterner (Cleveland Ohio) I seemed to like the "scene" in Portland the best. Laid back people, most very friendly.Rust free cars frickin' everwhere, made me sick! Great car show at racetrack every Wednesday, close to mountians, rivers, and oceans if you are into the great-outdoors. Very historic also, nice architecture, love all those arts and craft style houses in town. Not sure of the real estate market, **** i can barely afford my apt. in Orlando. I'm mainly here for the jobs. ...and HELL YES, Portland has the best strippers, whats with all those perv's out there? Music scene in Austin is out of control. No shortage of rust free vintage tin either. Nice people to boot. JT
I've lived in Chicago (Old Town), San Diego (North County), and Seattle (East Side). I liked San Diego best! I interviewed a few times in Austin because people gushed about it all time. Maybe I didn't visit long enough, but I wasn't blown away like I thought I would be. Regardless, all of them have better hot rod scenes than Myrtle Beach
Thanks for all the great input! I have to admit that I'm a little nervous moving from the only city that I have ever lived in, but it's just getting too damned expensive here. My ****ty little house is almost worth 1/2 a mill, there is no way that I'll ever be able to afford living in a nice part of town... so it's off to somewhere new. - Joe
I love san diego, over my years here I have seen it really grow and the traffic is a real nightmare but........ the weather is the best in the U.S. and the surf is always good. It probably wont be easy to live anywhere else unless you arent from S.D. good luck.
Average temp of 67degrees, low crime rate, hot chicks, cool cars, your right I'd leave san Diego FAST.. before it gets bad. Sounds like all the places you are looking at are cool. have fun
I was born here... and as for that 67 average temp BS... it has been over 90 for about 2 weeks now. (Maybe I should move to Portland!) - Joe
