The train was moving from the right side of the photo to the left. You can see the road that the car was driving on.
I believe the car was going toward the crossing, which is why it is on this side of the tracks. The locomotive that actually hit the car is out of the photo toward your left...

 

They backed it up for the picture.....

 

I doubt it...
