Major progress... No fancy tig welding here... this is a true trad build... no frills... no paint... no polish... all 1950's garage built hot rod. This IS a Jalopy ok last thread I went over the engine placement and decided I needed to change out the steering from the 37 ford box to a F-1 I wanted to keep things simple with this... and use what I have to get it done- for the transmission mount I used a sixties ford trans mount, I redrilled it for the shoebox trans and cut off the old holes on each end. I welded in nuts to the crossmember so that the mount would bolt right to it. this is what it looks like:
now the motor mounts.... I had a pair of new shoebox mounts... so why NOT use them? I used them... and the pair of broken mounts that were attached to this engine. The broken mounts I drilled out a size larger and with the trans mount in place--- I got the motor centered etc... and tacked the broken part of the old mounts to the cross member. after I made sure the engine was exactly where I wanted it I tacked them in good and dropped the engine weight to check clearances. worked great. I gusseted the broken mount piece and trimmed it and it looks like I made the damn thing... You cant even see the mounts with the flatty in-
Geez....I guess I'll hafta put my stroker Flathead in the Frankie Flyer. Looks real good. get it done and do some burnouts!!
my steering dilemma is solved with a simple F-1 box... look how nice it looks- I used the gusset plate on the inside to straighten out the box so its at the right angle- Its probably the best solution and there is plenty of clearance.
I love flatheads... I cant wait to fire this ****er up and drop the clutch- speaking of which I think I'm gonna run hanging pedals- NEXT- Driveshaft... pedals... and some final gusset welding. Heres a pic of the inside looking down at the trans.
jeez tuck..i just got your email. This is really exiciting to see come together. rough and raw, but still functional. get that small stuff taken care of and you can run that around the hood. oh yeah...more chrome..haha tok
they hacked holes in the floor farther back- i'm not sure what they're doing, one I can just tack back in place- but i'll still end up making the rear floor section. i'm just glad it didnt make it to the race track.
i know that it looks ***s right now...but man...what I wouldnt give to see it in bare metal....even the rims..with clean whitewalls... tok
you'll see it in bare metal some day bro. The ideal thing to do would be find a nice unmolested 34 frame and build it with that other hemi (if I buy it from dave) here with the Edmunds intake/ cragar adapter to toploader ford/banjo setup and wide fives all the way around. I plan on doing that but for now this is it... I can see how it was so much fun building these cars back in the day. 34's are alot bigger than a model a... the frames are setup for a swap like this... I really like the size- progress will slow over the next week as I need to pound out some work in the shop I'm up to my neck in it... but at least I can relax I got it this far. Its so much FUN to work on it without trying to over fabricate parts... pure function. I'm not going for the ****box award either... it should hammer out into a pretty tight little hot rod. tokyo I rolled it outside and snapped a profile pic for ya. Dig the stance? Tuck
ANOTHER UPDATE hahaha... I just finished the drive shaft. I did it the OL SKOOL way... be it fitting for the car. You grind around the weld untill you just break through to the sleeve. You tap out the sleeve and U joint joke- You take and shorten your drive shaft to the correct size Then tap in the sleeve to the driveshaft again and burn a weld around it. It should work, if not I'll have another made for me... but 9 times out of ten... I'll be driving it soon. I need to order some parts... I think jolene wants to drive it as much as me- Tuck
