Great looking Savoy. The one thing that bugs me is why do people mount the hood medallion upside down??

    1953 Plymouth Cranbrook Convertible

    Hello,

We saw this yellow Plymouth convertible on the road. It was in the opposite lane and when we turned around to get a better view, it was parked on the curb. It was a rare one at that, being a Plymouth convertible instead of a Ford or Chevy.

It was a mild custom done well. Later on, in my research, the pale yellow Plymouth Convertible was for sale in another coastal So Cal city.

We haven’t seen it since… that sunny day in So Cal a long time ago. YRMV

But, it did not sell on an auction site.

And, we have not seen it cruising the coastal highways during our up/down road trips during the month. The sun is out, the sky is clear, the ocean is blue and rivals the Caribbean for “Crystal Blue Persuasion” waters. So, where are all of the top down convertibles?

    Hello,

One of our high school friends had just purchased a 51 Plymouth Station Wagon. It was his first car and oddly, it was the same color.
    upload_2025-8-4_3-15-46.png
It was a used car and he could afford it based on his job and savings. So, the surfboards were stacked into the rear opening with ease.
upload_2025-8-4_3-16-39.png But, as we all found out with boards stuck in the back of an open station wagon or sedan delivery, roaming noxious g***es that smelled like exhaust is noticed. But, back then, we knew the carbon monoxide was the “killer” culprit,” so we took caution when we smelled the exhaust fumes. We knew somehow, the fumes of CO were odorless and if/when we smelled gas fumes, it was there. At first, we were sleepy. Then we stuffed old T-shirts and towels in the opening, like a sealer.

So, roof mounted surf rack was the next logical step. A good rubber seal made the smell go away. Now, all that was needed was gas money, some cans of oil, and a nice shiny wax job.
upload_2025-8-4_3-17-22.png Around our high school and at the beach, he really wanted this version:

Then, at least, he could cruise without surf racks as a normal station wagon, teenage cruising machine.

But, as teens, we saved what we could so we traveled to places South of Long Beach for weekends and if enough money was saved or earned, made the two+ hour drive to Baja, Mexico surf spots. So, a black custom paint was thought of, and highly sought out, but not in the immediate “to buy” list.

    Note:

On our many road trips to the Los Angeles South Bay area for surf movies and surf adventure trips, we knew that the Dewey Weber Shop always had a similar Plymouth Station Wagon parked out in front of the shop.

We saw it when my brother bought his first Dewey Weber Nose Rider Board. Did it make him a better nose rider? Nope… but for some odd reason, his cutbacks were better than his old board and if/when he got on the nose, he did look more stable. But, nose riding was not the most noticeable improvement in his surfing… what are the odds that a “nose rider” would just ride better overall? YRMV

The branch first opened in 1959. It was an amazing library for its draw as a cool location on the corner leading to the main street in the downtown business area. That was our 2nd hang out/cruising spot as teenagers and drive through surfers on lunch break or southerly road trips. YRMV

No, that is not my friend’s 51 Plymouth surf station wagon parked in front. He did not go in libraries as far as I know or knew. But, of all things, a girl we knew who lived in the Belmont Shore area took us to the new library a year later and it was an awesome place. The large gl*** windows faced the sun in the morning gl***y water surface of the bay just steps away. Pure So Cal experience...
