bend 2x4 steel for ch***is I woull like to build my own 2x4 ch***is for a model A .. I dont like the straight side rail look.. I want to contour the rails (made from 2x4 11 gauge) to the body of the model A.... It would be great if a could use a three roller bender...? Should I use 2x4 or have a C channel bent at a local shop... then bend and add boxing plate.. I would prefer not to saw cut .. I did this on a small piece it does not seem to finish on the outside very smooth cuts every 3 inches and i am worried that a longer piece will twist.... ANY HELP would be appreciated? Thanks in advance....
It isn't exactly what you want to do, but it might give you some ideas. I have used a hole saw on rectangular tubing to get a radiused edge on a joint. I would use a hole saw, then use the cut out circle and rotate the leg to the angle I wanted. Then I would use the grinder, and a small piece of s**** to patch ther exposed edge..
Check the Tech Archive. I think it has a couple different posts about how to build a frame. Look for Littleman's coupe, he curved box tubing for his rear frame and it looked excellent.
sorry just re read your post if you cant find anyone with a roller where your at just make your side plates out of sheet and plate top and bottom its easy to box you already have a template
I've seen it done by hand and a home made jig. it took leverage and heat. I'll run down later and take some photos of the finished product
just to clarify I am trying to curve the rails on a hrizontal plain just like a 32 forD ch***is. If you look at a stock model a ch***is the rails go striaght from the front to the back ... really simple .. The car will have no fenders NO running board it will be an open wheel car... Hoping some has done this before with a 2x4 tubing .. Or as mentioned previously should I have metal bend in the shape of a C then just add the box section (4th side)....
Do a web search for Autoweld. They can mandrel bend the rails and send them to you to finish. They probably have specs for a stock A frame, but could also bend to a pattern if you want to trace the body on the floor and roll it up to send to them. their prices look reasonable. I plan to have a pair of custom rear kick up rails made soon.
