I'm rebuilding the front suspension on the 49 Chevy. I got some replacement lower control arm shafts. The replacement shafts have some lock nuts on the shaft that the bushings screw into. The shop manual shows these nuts and describes how to install the new shafts. You can see the difference in the photo below. On my control arms, there are plates spot welded into the inside of the arm (see photo below) When I try to install the replacement shaft with the nuts, there is not enough clearance. Did I get the wrong replacement shafts? Can I just install the new shafts without the lock nuts?
well i havent worked on a '49 yet, but i have been redoing the suspension on a '54 chevy all weekend. all of the replacement parts we ordered looked almost exactly like the old parts, there were no drastic differences like that. whick would leave me to believe that you have gotten the wrong part. the old arms look almost identical to the ones i just installed yesterday. good luck, -fLeEtwOOd-
I found out that the control arms that I have aree of the later model 49 so they do not need the lock nuts. The parts have been returned for replacement. In the picture of the control arm, you see the reinforcement that is welded into the inside, this means it is a late production 49 so the shafts do not neeed the lock nuts.
