History What'd you do today, I explored an old drag strip

So I moved to Charlotte about a week ago and went to the shuffle town dinner where I heard about the old shuffle town drag strip so today I went out and found the track so here's all my pics if any of the grey beards out there raced here back in the day feel free to chime in with stories and maybe help me identify some of the pics I took

Sweet! I lived in the area about 10 years ago and I had no idea that dragstrip existed... Where? South of Charlotte, North, or...?

I live less than a mile from there as the crow flies . The strip ran from old Hwy 16 that the ShuffleTown Diner is on towards new 16. Spectators would sit up on a hill where the Park is now. Local residents shut it down from noise & now they have 485 outer belt noise right next door to contend with.
The Sunday crowd of fans & racers was always huge .

Wow ! Thanks for posting. As is said, all things return to the earth. When was it closed?
Think there might be one or two around here that probably look like that today.

already have it set up for my ashes to be spread at a local closed down drag strip

I checked and inventoried over 5,000 cases of turkeys and hams, so you smucks can have a nice Thanksgiving. Then, I got home and marked the spindles for my T Bucket, so I can cut the arms off.

 

Gather up the local drag strip gurus, get a 55 gallon drum of weed killer, a 1/2 dozen chain saws, a few weed wackers ....and you'll have it ready for some "not-to-serious-drag racing

 

I was 15 years old when Shuffletown Drag Strip opened in 1959. It was about 5 miles from our house and didn't take long to ride my bicycle there. By the time it closed 35 years later I had made over a thousand passes there on motorcycles from street bikes to twin-engine Top Fuel Harleys.
I visit it every couple years or so to reminisce, the last time about 6 months ago. There is nothing but a 4-wheeler path left of it now. The most memorable event I attended was a match race between Tommy Ivo and Don Garlits in 1969. I was learning how to ride my single engine T/F Harley that weekend too.
