Hot Rods Detroit help

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by racer-x, Feb 29, 2020.

  1. I'm in town for the autorama. I have to take woodward out to clarkston each day do to 75 being closed. I cross telegraph Rd twice a day. It got me wondering were exactly did the street racing I hear about happen. I usually hit cool hot rod related spots when I come to town. I would like to find this historic spot even if nothing is there today.

  2. Telegraph Racing happened around the I-96 and Telegraph area and cruising happened from there south to about Van Born....they heyday was Korvettes parking lot in the 60-70’s

Where your crossing is too far north..

  3. You could take Woodward up to Clarkston...8 mile to Square lake was it for Woodward...

  4. I raced from 10 Mile Road to 16 Mile Road (sometimes farther to Square Lake Road) on Woodward. I raced on Telegraph Road from about Fenkell to Grand River. Mostly on Woodward since I lived near 11 Mile Road and Woodward in Royal Oak. Once in a while we had a shootout on I-75, but it was rare.

The Korvettes was by Joy road, used to be the hang out spot until the police started giving loitering tickets circa 1980

  8. So if I'm driving from clarkston back to cobo hall tomorrow on Woodward at what street and what way do I turn to get to the spot. What intersections am i looking for. My trucks GPS needs a address. Thanks guys. The history of Detroit's street racing has a far reach. Here's a pic of me sitting in the real silver bullet. 20150815_163447.jpg 20150815_161904.jpg

  10. Well that’s a Woodward Legend...I’m not a Woodward Expert..before my time and I was a Telegraph Cruiser....I’ve always heard the 12-14 mile section was kind of the spot..

  11. I used to watch the Silver Bullet race. My cousin, Chris Proctor worked at the Sunoco station in Birmingham where Jimmy Addison had the car.

What's this I-96 you speak of? You sure you don't mean beautiful tree lined four lanes divided Schoolcraft?

Just stop by the Motor City Hot Rod display and they will be able to fill you in on racing on Woodward in the day. A lot of our members were part of it.
Motor City Hot Rods, it’s not a club it’s an attitude.
