Long lines and even and odd day fill ups, I was working at M&M Speed in Sacramento we were a Crower dealer and folks were looking for better MPG these were good for about 4-5 more MPG in many cases: https://www.ebay.com/i/133288914796?ul_noapp=true Good Cruiser Cam.
Also hot items were intakes like the Edelbrock Streetmaster,Offy Dual-Port and Holley Economaster Carbs.
Ugh... my mom was terminally ill when that was going on and we had that even-odd license plate thing going on too. Gas lines would wrap around the block and people's tempers were very short..
1980ish??.......my boss had bought me a brand new '79 Lincoln Mark V Cartier edition....I only lived about 1 mile from the shop in Huntington Beach, but the 6 mpg was a killer. I'd send my secretary out every Friday to wait in the lines to fill it up.
I worked at Kings Speed Shop in Indiana during the 70's when this was going on, we were also a Sunoco station. In late 78 I opened my own shop, I also sold gas.. Terrible time to be in business, I went broke in 1980 and had to close. Taxes, interest rate and high unemployment were definitely not my friend. I thank my father in law for the loan to allow me to pay off my creditors so I didn't have to hang my head in shame when I saw them..
I remember 3 of us were in our hot rods on a Saturday and 2 of us could buy gas on that day and our pal on a Model A ran out of gas, I found a liqueur bottle in a ditch on the side of the road, we drained gas out of our cars to get him home, I don't miss those times at all. HRP
What gas crisis? I worked at the local Texaco during the Carter administration. I'd just fill up my GTO after closing. No muss, no fuss!
Commercial vehicle were exempt from the odd/even day fill up mandate. I had a friend make up a couple of magnetic signs for a non-existent company that I put on the front doors whenever I needed gas. Worked like a charm...
I had to drive my personal car fairly often for work in the 70s. If i couldnt get gas from a (10 gal) station, I could go down to the TIME (?) tank farm and always get what i needed. We were told they always had gas because of Venezuela connection, but the gas was always available and about a buck a gallon more expensive. Pretty pricey when paycheck was only about $5 an hour.
