...I wanna give it a shot. I'm fairly good with a pencil & paper but never take the time to draw anymore. I think, more that anything, it's the lack of color that has me bored. I'd like to try a little striping. What shoud I start with & where can I get a brush or two & some One Shot? I'm not too proud to read a "how-to" book either if it would help. I'll probably suck at this so I don't want to sink too much into this little experiment - but I do want to give it a try. Thanks, JH
I have a 00 mac brush new I tried my hand at it and I suck, I dont have the time to dedicate to it. PM me your addy and Ill stick it in the mail
Check out "Pinstriping and Vehicle Graphics" by John Hannukaine. A bit dated, but the basics never go out of style. Good practice exercises and basic layout stuff. If you have a Dick Blick art store in your neighbourhood, they sell Mack brushes and 1Shot.
i know guys that will draw the design , then run over it with the brush ....i like to just make up the stuff as i go ....a 00 mack is my brush of choice...a little longer than some of the others....you might check on pinstriper.com tony has some brushes on there .... your local automotive paint supply house should have the mack touch up brushes.....get ya a 1/2 pint of paint....probably use mineral spirits at first ...as it is a fairly slow drying reducer....get a piece of glass (easier to wipe off....but get polished edges.....no finger cuts....) and practice , practice , practice....and most of all .....have fun .....if ya start stressin' out....stop ....and try it again another day ......brandon
Thanks for the help guys. Big A, I'll check the book store today for those titles. Scott, I sent you a PM. I really appreciate your offer. JH
Harrison...check out psychoarts.com. Greg is a HAMBer and I believe has some good PDF how-to files on the site.
I was gonna post something like this, so i guess i'll just ask my question here. I've been experimenting with paint pens on random things around the house (gournds, glass, etc) and I found im not half bad at pinstriping. Where is the best place to get 1shot? I found some stuff on ebay, but im not sure if the price is right. Guy has some mack brushes too. Figured i'd start with an 00 and 10 4 oz cans of 1shot. the 1shot is like 65 bucks for 10 cans http://cgi.ebay.com/1-One-Shot-Lettering-Pinstripe-PAINT-10-PRIMARY-COLORS_W0QQitemZ200002384566QQihZ010QQcategoryZ28111QQtcZphotoQQcmdZViewItem and the mack brush is 6.50 http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/MACK-Sword-Striper-PINSTRIPING-BRUSH-20-SERIES-Size-00_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQcategoryZ63702QQihZ010QQitemZ200002386037QQtcZphoto Good prices? Recomended places to shop online? Thanks guys, Scott
Check out this thread at the sketchkult site, it has a lot of answers for a newbie pinhead! http://sketchkult.com//phpBB/viewtopic.php?t=1110 I just gave my first shot at striping yesterday, and will go out striping in an hour or so again! Its really fun, its difficult, but fun!
Most people suck at first; the key is having the patience to practice and experiment until you can make the brush and paint do what you want them to. Get a piece of plexiglass, a brush and some one shot and just pull lines until you start to get a feel for what works and what doesn't. From there, just slowly built up a better selection of paint and brushes [experiment with different sizes and brands brushes until you figure out which ones work best for you]. Good luck!
I have been practicing for a little over a month now, and am getting pretty good a pulling a diecent line, and keeping steady, however, I suck at designing the actual patterns, and at keeping things symetrical. I printed out some work from other stripers, put it behind plexiglass, and just kept working untill I could trace their work nicely, and I have done that successfuly. I think I need to get some stabillo pencils, start drawing out my designs before I pull out the brush. Do most of you stripers do this, or do you just go freehand?
I just do it freehand, but then again I can't draw cool designs just paint them. I just draw a center reference line.
My best advice is to find a pro in the area and get them to let you watch them work. You'd be surprised what you can pick up in a short while. And as everyone else says, practice, practice, practice. Next time I'm in Knoxville I'll give you a shout. Good Luck!
Yeah, I tried drawing the designs out at first too - but it just didn't look right. I just mark center and a couple of reference marks now and go for it. I'm a lot happier with my work that way.
I also started working freehand, but now I marked some square fields behind the glass that I stripe on! I´m now at my second attempt at striping and can allready see progress!! Darn its fun! Challenging, but fun!!! If you are interested, you can see my attemps at this thread at Sketchkult: http://sketchkult.com/phpBB/viewtopic.php?t=4830
your designs are real good man...damn good for your first few attempts.. i've been at it for over a year and still can't come up with a good design of the top of my head... but,i can pull a single straight line like nobodys buisness,haha....
The paint you use isn't so important at first, but make sure you start out using a striping brush (like a Mack 00) because getting the "feel" of a striping brush is the most important thing...
I'm in the same boat as you. I've been looking at a picture/design and trying to copy it, not an exact copy, just the general idea. I also printed out some different sized grids to put under the glass to help keep things even. I still suck......... but I suck less now then the first time .
I tried this out on my car after renting a DVD. Check out my post, pictures, and link to Technical Video Rental. I did a few designs on paper before going to the car. The stripes on the car are my first attempt. Good luck! http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=117098
Don't know how many of you can make it, but you might want to check this out; http://www.eyeballreunion.com/fer06.pdf It's sorta small, but it's also only the fourth year for it. I went to it last year, and thought it ws pretty good for a smaller show. Had about ten good stripers there, one by the name of Kafka. He has a line of products that is sold through the Eastwood company catalog. Roger.....another FNG
