Discussion in 'Off Topic Hot Rods & Customs' started by DrDragon, Mar 5, 2020.

  1. Upgraded to MSD 12 volt system. Need help with the ignition wires to solenoid and MSD little red wire. I called MSD support and that guy was totally clueless. As am I.

Both Mallory and Pertronix distributors are wired like this diagram so the small red wire should go to the "I" terminal on the Solenoid which works with the key switch. With your test light on the "I'' terminal the light should come on and off the same as the ignition key switch, my HEI gets it's 12 volt source from the "I" terminal. 50's.jpg

  3. I connected the small red wire directly to the I terminal of the solenoid and the car runs as long as the starter is engaged. Turn the key back to "on" and it dies. Tested the solenoid and got 3.5 ohms and it gives a click when tested.
Put the small red wire directly to the battery and it ran fine.

We have been through this before. The "I" terminal on the solenoid is only hot when the starter is engaged. It is designed to by-p*** the ballast resistor for faster starts.

  5. Thanks Jeff and 40, I got it to work. I had to remove the ignition because it was a human rats nest and wires were dead, miss colored etc.
