Technical best carb for 283

Discussion in 'Traditional Hot Rods' started by Alidonix, Feb 18, 2020.

  1. Depends on several things. heads cam exhaust gearing stick or automatic ect. Mostly your ability to tune your setup. 55-283 003.JPG My 55 at present has a well worn 283. and stock except hedders and a recurved dist. and I adapted a 625 carter to the stock 4GC intake. It runs like the proverbal ****d Ape!

We ran 2 660 double pumpers on a .060 over 283 on a tunnel ram with 6.50 gears and a Doug Nash 4 speed. Depends on how you going to use your car. For the street with a slush box I would stick to 500 cfm's.

On engine masters the run a vacuum gauge on the dyno to try and figure out is the carb is too small.

I ran a 63 283 with 1.94 intake valve 327 heads, an edelbrock single plane intake, Isky rev-master solid cam. Short collector ****** headers , Muncie 4 speed, and 4.88 gears in a O/T 68 Camaro with a 3310 780 holley on it. On the street. Big fun for a little engine. :D Lippy

Nothing wrong with running a small base or the larger base Rochester 2 barrels..

  8. The older I get, the more I appreciate a nice running two barrel.

I run the Edelbrock 1406 w/ electric choke, 600 cfm, on my stock Vortek 350 with 9.4 c.r. in a steel Deuce highboy. Runs fine and gets 22 mpg @ 75 mph on the interstate.

Listen to the guys who tell u to run a 500 cfm edelbrock. It’s a no brainer. Works very well. Stay away from anything larger. DB

  11. Ok in 1956 you could get a factory 265 engine equipped with dual 380 CFM carter WCFB carbs. That's 760 CFM. Now why is anything larger that a 500 CFM carb too big for a 283? Decades ago I ran a Carter AVS from a 440 of a .060 over 283. It worked great. I just tightened up the air valve on the secondaries.

Quick Fuel VS450. Ive got one on my 272 Yblock. Perfect for small V8s. Vacuum secondary, electric choke and adjustable air bleeds makes it very tuneable.

Yes....600-650 will work OK but its a bit to big for a cruiser type 283.

If you what a great vintage carb check out the Autolite "shoebox" 4 barrel. Typically 400 to 450cfm, vacuum secondary and very reliable. ....if you dont mind Ford parts on your Chevy....LOL.

Loose bolts laying on manifold , disconnected choke ground , lack of bushing in carb linkage ,split vacuum hose with machine screw stuck in it , missing airhorn screw , plug wires wrapped around carb parts....this is something you drive ???LOL..
