That's not a C4 transmission, it is and MX cast iron trans. The only weak spot in this transmission is the center case web where the low/rev servo bolts. The servo bolt also serves to locate the inner hub of the overrunning clutch. They have a habit of breaking the case at this point. It would be well worth the money to have someone go through the trans or at least adjust the two bands. You have to remove the pan to adjust the intermediate band and you can check the servo bolt at that time.

I should have said that the MX transmission is a good transmission and was used in most of the full size Fords and Mercury's. I had a 65 Galaxie and a 65 T-bird with this trans and ran them pretty hard with no problems. I think the case/servo problem occurred when the rear band was never adjusted during the vehicle's life coupled with throwing it in reverse with a really high idle. The combination of the high reverse pressures, high idle and long travel due to not being adjusted put a lot of torque on the servo bolt.

I've always had a soft spot for 56 Mercury's. Here's a picture of me and my dad with our new 56 Mercury.

Where is the sump on the oil pan, front or rear. Exhaust exit at rear of manifolds? Driver side is congested with steering box and crossmember. Lots of these swaps have been done, that is a nice car, where did the y-block go?

That is a really nice ride - just dripping in potential. It’s funny I have a 58 Edsel convertible that came with a lever operated steering column instead of push ****on teletouch. It has the exact same steering wheel ,horn ****on and horn ring. It makes sense I guess for Ford to pull from the same parts bin - I have seen this same column in 58 T- birds. I had the steering box rebuilt a few years ago and it had the type of box where the solid steering shaft goes all the way up to the steering wheel.

I suppose I must be a true hack, If I buy a engine and trans to be good, I treat it as if it were good, I dont start changing the timing chain or rebuilding it or the trans. until I see how it does.

Hey fella's, so I tried the new mounts that I ordered today. They bolted up to the block in 2 spots just as some of you have suggested. When I dropped the engine in though it fell right between my two slots on my crossmember. I guess I could just drill out a spot right between the two. However, I would like it to drop in the top slot. Does anyone have any tricks they'd be willing to share?

On a side note, I dropped my pan and put a new gasket on it. Now I have a leak happening right where the rear main seal/pan meetup. Did I do this? I can't tell if its the seal or if I did a poor job of putting on the gasket and missed some old debris or something?

I interpreted post #37 to say don't start taking apart a supposed "good" engine.

I may be another hack, if the engine looks clean and has a believable story I just put it in the car and run it.

    Oh gotcha.
I found some metal shavings and other small things. It was enough for me to inspect and I'm glad I did.

Nice score Sage ! Can't provide info on the swap, but i knew a guy in 1962 that put a 372 56 Packard Carribean motor in a 56 Ford. If he could do that, you can surely do this.
