For some reason I never understood, Chrysler used the cheapest of the 3 lines of 2-barrel carbs that Carter offered, the BBD. (AMC could afford the better WCD, but apparently Chrysler could not ;) ).

If the carb doesn't need rebuilding, then drive it. If the carb does need rebuilding, give some consideration to what others have mentioned about upgrading to one of the factory 4-barrel intakes and carbs.

Generally, the BBD is good for maybe 60k miles without many issues. Shortly thereafter, the throttle body generally needs to have bushings inserted, and often a new throttle shaft. By this time, the vacuum piston (deliberately made out of softer aluminum, to be sacrificial, is worn to the point of allowing vacuum to seep around the piston, and the step-up rods are too high in the step-up jets (read rich running, poor economy). If one decides the carb is worth doing the bushing/throttle shaft replacement, one should also acquire a new step-up piston.

hey guys, thanks for all the good info! I bought a few boxes full of parts; carb-rebuild set, bushings front/rear, waterpump, etc etc. And I already turned the front tyres, so the whitewall isn't visible. The rear tyres ( all black ) were too good to replace for this moment. I already had my share of mopars, so I know a little what to expect. I will post some pics later on!

Years ago I had a '63 and a '64. '63 had a 361, '64 had a 383. If I remember right both were 2bbl carbs. pretty sure only the "Letter" series cars got the 413 and 426 engines. Without the "Letters" it was simply an appearance package. All the looks without the suspension or the go fast stuff. The unlettered cars were 2dr or 4dr hardtops whereas the "Letter" cars were 2dr hardtops. Not the prettiest cars in the world but I really enjoyed them. Big, comfortable, reliable and my '63 got better mileage at 70 mph than it did at 55! It was really high geared.
    NO WAY on 20's!
