Alright, been to shows where the cars have plates the same year as the car. How do get these cars registered with those plates? Mike
Yeah it depends on the state, but the last 2 states I lived in allowed a year of manufacture plate to be run on the car. Call your DMV.
Here in Michigan you submit a photocopy of the restored plate along with a registration form and they mail you the paperwork so you can run the plate. It's like an antique plate, once you register it it's good for the duration. Frank
Tags have always been the States deal and as such they did different things at different times. I did a Google and came up with this... http://www.sos.state.il.us/special/plate_history/start_history.html It's pretty neat and I'm sure will have the answer on the stickers. It's your tax dollars at work wo you might as well enjoy it.
Each state is different on this matter,,one ez way to "cheat " so to speak is to apply for a vanity tag with the tag you wish to use. You can then put the tag you wish to use on your car ,and apply your reg. sticker..Just to play it safe out of state ,,keep you "new" tag in your glove box
I believe you can still run year of make plates in Illinois, but you must have a set of current plates for the vehicle in the car with you at all times. So in a sense, you are only displaying the old plates...they are not valid...and you are driving on the new plates you are carrying with you. I'll have to double check the IVC tomorrow to be sure. In South Carolina we can't run YOM plates yet,,,it's been sent to the house several times but nothing has become of it. I personal know a few guys that do run them on their cars and keep the new tag in the car,,,,,they tell me ,,"If I get stoped and the officer inquires about the tag,,,,I'll say,,,Oh,man I forgot to change it back before I left the car show,,,,I'll change it right now if you want me to officer"!,,,might work ,,might not. That's what I thought, though it seems to me that you had to have antique plates issued. However, I don't play the game well. Cosmo: P.S. Yes, this is how I drive this car, every day, into Chicago on the Eisenhower.
A car at a show may have Year-Plates, but it doesn't mean the car is actually registered under those plates... it's a show
Big Olds is legally registered with a "Year of Manufacture" plate, 1947. It cost $35.00 and is good for as long as I own the car. I sent in a photocopy of the plate, my current registration and a copy of my insurance cert. In less then two weeks they sent me back my registration with my 1947 plate as the one and only legal plate for the car. I also received a $101.00 yearly discount with Grundy insurance because I'm running this type of plate. I tell ya what, it sure felt great last month on my birthday when I didn't have to write that yearly registration check for Big Olds. YOM plate and "Historical" plates are the deal of the century here in Michigan. Check with the DMV in YOUR state for exact details.
