Technical Pictures of hot rodded juice brakes?

Discussion in 'Traditional Hot Rods' started by Josh the Painter, Mar 21, 2020.

  1. Hi guys,
Coming close to paint on my juice brakes but before I finish that step I was looking for some inspiration.
Any pictures of juice brakes that have been drilled, vented, scooped etc would be appreciated.
    Cheers,
    Josh

I added some aluminum scoops and made them functional(there are a lot of holes under the scoops). An old friend told me to skip the holes In the back and make sure to add them around the rim. In the rain the brake dust and water drains out better. IMG_0894.JPG

dont paint brake drums. Paint is an insulator. It leads to overheating, and brake fade, Rust is an excellent dissipator of heat

Ed Cardoza from Merced, CA made those using a cold chisel and a hammer! No press.

I wondered how someone could press those in there without some serious distortion. Looks great.
I really wish some enterprising young guy would tool up and make early Ford backing plates for self energizing guts. Nothing looks as good as the old Ford backing plates with the deep T shaped recess, chromed and the recess painted. Yeah I’ve read all the conversion threads but they make a mess out of them and the Lincoln and F100 backing plates just aren’t as simple and pretty.
Hey, they made Kinmonts and spiffed up Lincolns, how ‘bout some updated ‘40s?

also I think @Tuck used a pull max to make the louvers for his

  16. Thanks to everyone for your responses! If guys add to it their should be a sweet library going on here.

Dumprat those Aluminium scoops look great, absolutely period for a 30s car. Where they something you made?
    Cheers,
    Josh

  17. Clever idea blowing the inside a lighter colour, I may have to follow suit. And I'm with you, those scoops are the tits.
    Cheers

  18. Im loving those scoops. These are like the ones speedway sell? I would pick a set up but by the time I buy 2 sets and ship it comes to about $400 Australian!
    Cheers,
    Josh

  19. They're sweet louvers, they squeezed 4 in there but so perfectly. As others had said perhaps lover the other side the opposite direction for optimised air flow.
    Cheers,
    Josh

  20. Looking good, I notice all the louvered patches in the background, were these being sold as weld ins or are they test pieces?
    Cheers,
    Josh

  21. Would have made my life easier if I could have bought new backing plates that were self energising, theres something about the early hydraulic plates that are just hard to beat.

As for pressing the louvers I imagine distortion's not such an issue with how thick the steel is.
    Cheers,
    Josh

I bought the scoops at a swap meet about 15 years ago. Not sure who made them. They were made for 40's self adjusting brakes but fit the 55 bending with a few little cuts.

Looks to me they were cut from the ends of an alloy valve cover, maybe with 3 tabs welded inside for attachment. You see useable damaged or "one missing" covers at swap meets for a few dollars all the time. I'm going to start buying these up! Great idea, I don't know if it's mine or somebody elses!

I have a set like the ones Dumprat used, they have a name on the inside, I’ll check when I go out to the shop. I thought I bought them from Moon years ago for $90. I remember thinking that they were too pricey for what they are. Moon only sells the smaller ones like in Post #6 now I guess.

I just googled "aluminum pots and pans". Seems like a visit to Walmart (or equivalent) would get you something for a few bucks that could be whittled into a similar pair of scoops. Weld three tabs inside for mounting. Maybe could use stainless pieces; not sure if it could be welded upon without distortion or discoloration. Maybe epoxy?

Re bendix/40 backing plates, I'm not sure Brian is doing them anymore, alot of work, but its woth asking him, he dpes a great job.
F250 is an option, keeps 12 " drums.
Matt Bryant use to make really nice mesh vents for 40 backing plates, Hazecity on Instagram, look for 'Venting Backing plates' thread on here.
