Morning all,
I’m redoing the headers and exhaust on my 1928 Model A Tudor hot rod. Lake headers gone along with the 6” long “mufflers” and under chassis headers and exhaust out the back.

So, with that beings said, how are you running your exhaust out the back? Straight tips, down turn with a slash cut, turn downs just in front of the body?

Being an old Mopar guy we always ran turndowns but show me, well us, what you got.

Mine come straight out the back. I’m have a ‘32 tank kit on my ‘31 A and the pipes run just under the brackets for it.

 

I always prefer full length pipes...and like you turn downs are top on my list, especially when fairly close together..
Unfortunately my "X" frame as well as 2 1/2" exhaust would not let me do it..so had to go in front of he back wheels...

I made these big echo cans at the back because I am lousy at getting everything symmetrical. As long as it looks even at the back, it is good enough.

 

My F100 has been with me since '72, so there have been numerous exhaust 'exit points'.
First one in '72 was just before rear tires, at the 'diagonal' at rear of running boards. Perfect for turn downs, but after a time, the 'poot-poot' sound of uneven 4 firing on each side (most audible to me, sitting on drivers side) got the best of me.
I tore them out, leaving the 36" glass packs and re-routing new muffler moly to the rear, up and over the axle housing. Oval tips, (heavy...16 gauge, chromed...5" wide by 1.5" high, on 2" pipe...Tips exited under rear fenders, slightly canted outward, about 15 degrees. Looked clean, but not 'racy'...
After a couple of years, I cut the tailpipes off, and ran 2-1/2" out behind the glass packs, this time into a pair of tapered chrome megaphones with baloney sliced and rolled ends. "Scavenger" style, (muffler shops called 'em "cheaters", because they short-cut the extra 'over the axle' and out.)
They have a 'hairy' look, and an audible 'voice'. Start the engine, and it sounds like authority!
Getting to miss the all-the-way-out-the-back, however. Think I'm going back to ovals under the rear fenders.

 

Timely thread! Just this morning I asked my wife for a bit of help tonight holding the exhaust tips in a few places (on the truck!) so I can determine their final resting place. The tips are straight SS with a bell on the end


On my roadster I rolled them out along side the fuel tank, straight 2.250" pipes, ceramic coated all the way to the flathead, aluminum motorcycle pipe caps pounded in the ends to finish them.

 

Those down turned exhaust cause problems for the cars behind them on dirt paths to the parking area , made my Black 33 look brown at a local get together plus I had the Top down, big mess on a dry dusty day

 

Ignore the meats. Tips are collector reducers tacked to fabricated 2-1/2" pipes clamped to SpinTech cans and doglegged under the axle. Bare metal with clear engine paint.

 

Turned out at a 45 degree angle and slightly turned down.

Good idea to check your provincial / state requirements as well before installing. Pretty sure in BC the tips have to exit past the rear of the car

 

Pipes are 2-1/2" and stuck about 3-4" more strait out. Couple hundred miles and rear bumper would need cleaning from exhaust haze. Shortened the 3-4" and put about 1/16 of a 90° bend down and bumper cleaning time gets up to around a 1000 miles..

Straight out the side! Haha! The 32 has stainless tips that follow the same plain as the rear frame horns. And end just past the bumper.

Also a Merc I owned at one time...

 

Wackdaddy, the law here states the exhaust must exit behind the passenger cabin, but does not specifically say where, in a pickup, turndowns off the muffler under the box is.legal. Aircare used to tell guys they were illegal because it was tougher to test, but I always asked for proof, and showed them mva paperwork as proof. I loved arguing with them.

 

Don't really have any good pictures with whats left of the pipes! haha just straight pipes all the way out the back tips are worn as they should be..

 

Mine end just before the rear axle. They turn down and they suck ass! Dust and dirt all over. My rear tires turn brown. Plans are to extend both pipes about 5-6 inches behind and under the axle with bell tips . Got all the stuff, just need to get enough time.
