Car was running fine a few weeks ago. Decided to replace old dist cap, wires and coil. Now it just turns over but won’t fire. Any suggestions?

'55 was Positive Earth & '56 was Negative Earth. Clearly an electrical prob. Check & re check.
If you replaced a known good coil with a really nice looking, new one made in China, this could be your issue? Your old coil was likely better.

Are you getting spark? No spark, start putting the old parts back on. If you have spark, did you wire the plugs right. Proper rotation? On my GMC the big end of the connecting rods comes very close to the cam. If anything but the heel is facing the crank, bad news, On my Packard I never noticed that being a problum.

I'm pretty confused--- The op said it was running fine ,did a minor tune up, now you guy's are saying the con rod is possibly hitting the cam?????????? Never had that happen on a Packard.

It is fairly easy to screw up the wiring in the distributor when replacing the points. Carefully check the wires were they enter the distributor body, make sure the point plate ground wire is intact, carefully inspect the wires that attach to the points contact.

An ‘open’ where there shouldn’t be one (i.e. point plate ground) or a complete circuit where there shouldn’t be one (point contact terminal inadvertently grounded) will cause a ‘no start’. Also ....make sure the contact on the points are absolutely clean. Doesn’t take much to interfere with current flow there. Easily contaminated when changing points.

If it ran before you began the tune up, it should run now.......provided.......
