Can someone tell me what steering wheel attachment GM column utilized on 1969 and newer column. I need to fabricate a Steering Wheel Adapter which will go from my 3 hole attachment to the 69 and newer GM column attachment. I think the GM column utilized a single bolt and nut attachment but is it keyed or tapered? If someone knows of a adapter that will go from 3 hole attachment to GM attachment that would be great.
I don't agree on alchemy's adapters for everything since I want an odd ball one for my OT car, but that one is a common one.
They don't make one for a '50 Dodge. Had to fabricate a mount from the original steering wheel hub...
A friend had a “die cast“aftermarket adapter just turned to dust.....luckily he wasn’t at speed on the freeway!
Thanks for your reply I will check it out. I have a three bolt column however the wheel I want to use is for a GM column therefore I need to purchase if I can find an adapter that will go from 3 bolt column to GM style wheel. If not I will make an adapter but I need the detail for a GM column, thread size length, taper if it applies or maybe it is keyed. Thanks again
Have you looked inside your GM steering wheel? You will probably see a bunch of splines in there. And I don't know what you are talking about when you say a 3 bolt column. The hot rod standard of a 3 bolt mounting system was not ever standard on a production car column. What is your column from?
Sorry for confusion, I have a Speedway Hot Rod Column, this column has a quick disconnect designed for a 3 bolt wheel. The column is splined, the adapter is splined. For example Most of the Grant Wheels will bolt to the quick disconnect however I want a 1940 Delux Steering Wheel, to the best of my knowledge they all use a GM style attachment therefore I need the detail ***ociated with the GM column to make the adapter., example thread size, taper if it applies or if the column is keyed. , note I do not have the 40 delux wheel yet to reference. I want to keep the quick disconnect feature on my column if at all possible. Thanks again and hope I have not confused the request
Original 40 wheels had a tapered and keyed shaft hole. Repros can be had like stock or with a new GM spline. Or, you can cut the bung off the back of your wheel, machine it flat, and drill 3 holes through it to bolt the wheel down on your removable disconnect with no adapter needed.
Outstanding idea, I really appreciate the feedback. The wheel I'm looking at simply says "fits GM style Column". Think I will order wheel and make it fit.
