I'm gobsmacked! [EDIT: A video of the run showed HE DID SAVE IT! The video apparently got deleted.] Fantastic presence of mind to keep your cool and work with what you had (left) to work with. My hat's off to you sir. That could have been much worse. I hope the car got repaired too. That driver gets my "NEW WHITEY-TIGHTEYS AWARD".
I think it highlights that Wide World of Sports saying I'll never Forget something along the lines of " Celebrating the Thrill Of Victory and the Agony of Defeat"...kinda sorta......When going near 150mph + with all the concrete and steel everywhere, even with a cage you gotta be saying a prayer, religious or not...I seriously am not sure I want to know the outcome of that...I hope he lived...
Stogy, I am not sure what happened to my reply to the original post--if it got deleted for linking to video of the incident which is too new for the HAMB then why is the op still up. I did not get any notification of the deletion so I am a little mystified as to where my post went. Anyway the car is the Bad News (formerly Mr Boston) Fiat driven by Kurt Cruise and although he did eventually tag the wall it was not an extreme hit. Roo
Thank you @rooman...this Big Picture we revere is so full of Death with many captured on film and I am all too aware of the danger and understand that man evidently largely owes his life to the deaths of those before him in this sport... May good health be with you and the Family...
If I am not mistaken the Jewel T was bought by Ron Zavarella and his father after the nationals, I don't know which year. the Jewel T was stolen from the Zavarella's and parted out. There was some conjecture about who stole it, but it could not be proven.
I was also intrigued by what looks like a spring leaf front wheel tie down. Its easy to forget that a lot of the things we have commonly available to us today - ratchet tie downs etc. - were not commonly available back when. I love studying your old pictures for ideas.
Forgive the bad picture - it was in my uncle's stuff and think it is a late 50's car - looks like it had an engine set back - and what would BH be - for blown ?
B/H stands for B/hot roadster. Before they were fuel altereds, they were nitro burning roadsters A, B, OR C, depending on engine size. AA/HR, as was painted on the side of Pure Hell in it's early years, stood for Blown Fuel roadster. Your Uncle apparently had a bad ass hot rod!
Above, a Bantam body to a T body. Interesting how just a body change can change the look of the "whole" car. From...kind-of a back yard car to an...I'm coming to get you" attitude car..! Mike
Yes, raced in Pa. My cousin Den's car. Built by his brother Buzzy. Originally powered by a Big Olds, then the 260 and finally a Boss 302. Sent down the road and replaced by this BBF Falcon
Mike, a whole lot more that the body changed--the frame is a different configuration as well. The wheels and the motor may have been the only parts that made the transition. Roo
Frame looks the same. Granted, while the roll bar looks "similar", it's just a close copy in design, I missed that. I guess that could be the same for the frame...but...it sure looks the same in these shots. Looks like the same front radius rods also. Shock arrangement is different. The new version is still a cool car... Mike
Look again Mike. On the second version the lower rails run uphill to the front crossmember from the mid plate while the original has parallel rails. The motor is also much lower in the frame. The first version also has hairpin style location for the front axle that runs close to parallel to the ground and the second has a parallel 4 bar that runs up to the frame at a relatively steep angle.
