Re-working my brakes and one side is missing the (dust cover?) on the inside. Should I try to find a replacement or just run without?[IMG]

  4. If you have a real inner grease seal its over kill.Lots of cars were made without them.

I have a box full of those because I have never used them since I started using 53-56 F100 brakes on several of my cars in the 1970s. Be sure to include the self adjusters

  6. Yes, I'd go shopping for a Grease catcher. It's cheep insurance. Those backing plates look to be High Milers and future headaches if not repaired. I can hear the Look on your face. What the H--L is he talking about? The ware marks on the 4 pads where the shoes rest. Those are guides for the shoes to keep them square to the drums. When you put new shoes on and they get some ware on the linings I have seen the metal part of the shoe hang up on the edge of the groove and hang the shoe up. If your going to use those weld up the ware marks and file them back flat and square.

Yeah them babies are pretty rough. I might even put a weld bead on the shoe rests and grind them flat. None of the Ford car drum brakes had the shields.
I’m sure others may chime in but I don’t like self adjusting front drum brakes. We know the self adjust stopping when backing but I’ve seen fronts get too tight. Disc/drum combo with rear self adjusters work great as all the Honda’s and our 56 with disc fronts we’ve owned...

I have a ‘57 axle under the truck now that I found on the cheap to get it around. Maybe it’s best to clean it up and use it. The drivers side has obviously come in contact with the ground at some time and I believe I know why. The threads on the spindle are pretty worn and there was a nail through the crown nut when I disassembled...

With the invention of neoprene seals that replaced the leather seals, the grease retainers are no longer needed.
Of course neoprene has only been around 50 , 60 years or so.

yes. When I took the retainers off, they were full of grease and dirt but I havent found any grease leaking out of my cars since the 70s and I leave them off

Well, turns out the sob was in the parts washer! I guess I left it there in the move.

Now for a bigger problem. I can’t find the hubs anywhere. I’m afraid they got left at the old house. This may be more of a problem...

But, yes I am going to repair the worn areas on the back plates before I install all the new brake parts.

Guess it’s time to go hunting a pair of ‘53-56 front hubs.
