Technical How to remove fuel from cylinders?

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by iwanaflattie, Apr 7, 2020.

  1. Hello guys.
I flooded the engine in the coe again
    This time more than others...
Fuel came out of the sparkplugs,I plugged the fuel line,,turned the key,the starter spun and lots of fuel came out...
Fuel still coming out of 1 and 3...
Is there a Way to remove all the fuel without spinning the engine several more times??

Just let it sit, head down and get oil and a filter.

  5. Cool...will let it sit for a while...
I think(I hope) I figured out why it got that bad...
Got almost 14 quart of fuel out mixed with oil from pan plus whatever came out of the cyls...
The starter bolt broke off so it wasn't engaging properly but I still tried to start it...
2 open vacuum ports open in carb,
Maybe too much pressure from pump(non mechanical)
And the 2 o-rings on the needles were loose or old .

I hope by fixing all that It works for a while...
Is there a way to bench test the carb for leaks?
    Thanks in advance.

If you have an electric pump, you could rig it up. You could use a manual pump, too, working it my hand. To determine if the seats are holding. Holleys don’t like a lot of fuel pressure!

What about carefully using an extended nozzle air-blower down the plug hole, use a rag at hole to capture the fuel as it exits the cylinder, oil pan will need to be drained anyway?

You may want to check bowls where needle and seats go. Some pitting and or build up of any kind can keep it from sealing even though new o-rings were installed.

  10. You need to check for damage from hydro lock now

Just take the spark plugs out and crank it over. Make sure you remove the coil wire first.

  12. Block carb up off manifold and Hook the hose to the carb and run the pump. Stick a pressure gauge in the line too.
It’s a really great idea to have an oil pressure switch so the pump only runs when it sees oil pressure

A fuel pump inertia switch would be a good idea also. You could source one from a junk Ford.

  14. thanks
    thanks

oil pan was drained all the way,,i can try air in the cyl,,,thanks
i will check again,,,they looked ok,,,,I blew into the inlet hole pushing the float up and down and it held ok..
    how do I check?
    thanks..

i didnt remove coil wire,,I will tomorrow,,thank you

I can try to buy/wire a pressure switch,,,I do have the fuel pressure regulator and gauge,,,Ill prop the carb on top of a container then will hook the fuel hose to it,so the container catches all the gas in case it still leaks...
with 4psi into the bowls and everything in good working order I shouldnt have any fuel dripping into the container unless I manually move the throttle, yes?

I dont know what that is, but i will look it up...thanks

  17. That much fuel I would say some one left fuel pump turned on and walked away

Don't squirt fuel on sparking coil wire. Ask me how I know.

  19. First, something fought hard against the starter causing the bolts to break. A cylinder full of liquid probably. If you’re lucky the bolts broke instead of a rod.
I’d try turning the engine over by hand with a bar first. Make sure it’s free and nothing clanking in there. If it’s noisy your fucked.

The cylinders will need evacuation from fuel and then oiled thru the plug holes. Turn it by hand with it oiled.
If you make it that far then you’re next step will be disable the ignition and fuel pump then hooking up the starter after bolt repair and doing a compression test. I’d expect the results to be slightly low but even across all cylinders.

  20. Ok...I will buy the gauge today

I did for a second but it was mosty trying to start I hope.

    I bet the smoke escapes.

    Ok,I Did it backwards.
I did this before I read this message.
I dug the broken bolt from the block, put the starter on,removed the carburator, drained the oil, removed the sparkplugs
then with the fuel pump off using the starter,I spun the engine and that's I found out the cyls were full of fuel...
I spun it like 10 times and didn't hear any noises...I will test compression today after I check if fuel is still coming out of plug #1 and #3...
    Thanks so much..

  21. Seems like leak is fixed, put new oil,filter,carb...etc....now I think I burned my starter spinning the engine all this times..

  23. will the motor spin by hand

  24. Yes...I picked another starter...it will spin on the bench...the old one is dead...
The only problem is the new one only has 3 posts as opposed to 4

Unless they're cut , probably nothing wrong with the o rings , just swollen from gasahol

  26. will the engine spin by hand with socket on crank bolt ?

  27. Still need to squirt oil in the cylinders through the sparkplug holes before spinning it over anymore.

  28. I can spin the engine by grabbing the flywheel and rotating it..

    Will do that tomorrow..thanks

  29. That’s not the same but maybe.
can you make several complete revolutions? can you feel sticky or hard spots?
I’m not sure I could do this from the flywheel, I’ve never tried because it’s easier with a socket on the crank bolt.
