I had my eye on a 1986 Monte Carlo SS for the boy mechanic who is now 16. It's been sitting in the alley for years without plates. No one was ever home when we knocked.

Finally I sent my son to check. Sure enough the car was for sale for 12. Now this car looks good from a distance but it is a major rust bucket and the paint is shot. Lots of work but character building for the boy.

I though wow for $1200. that's a hell of a good deal even with the rust. So we get some cables and boost it sound great for sitting. Meanwhile the son and daughter of the owner are beaking off about how great the car is mothers pride and joy, just needs a paint job blah blah blah. Quite annoying. Mother shows up to make sure we are the right people to restore her car. Sure thing granny.

My son is almost crying that his dad is actually going to pull out his wallet. (doesn't happen often) and seeing himself cruising in it. So I say I'll run to the bank and get the $1200. $1200? she says It's $12,000! With that the Clampetts start laughting. Well it turns out that Junior has been watching Barret Jackson and is now an expert on valuing rusted out '86 Monte Carlos.

    We just walked away. WTF!!!!

The camaro next to it isn't worth $12,000. Well it was still a good learning experience for JR. about how many car ignorant idiots there are out there.

There was an older lady here who had a few pretty neat cars in her yard. 1940 Plymouth coupe that looked like a runner and in back, a 1931 Desoto. The Desoto had had a cloth top. It rotted out, the interior rotted out, the floor rotted out, the body rotted out. The stainless radiator shell and headlights looked good and of course the cast iron axles, engine, trans looked OK. She had seen a very nice restored 31 Desoto in a museum valued at $30,000 so she thought hers was worth the same!! And of course hers WOULD be worth $30,000 if she spent 40 or 50 thousand dollars fixing it up :D

  5. that would have got my patented response.... "WHAT ARE YOU? ****IN' NUTS!" It's the question asked alot at PNW swap meets.

If you put $12,000 into that car it would be worth $5,000. :p

I knew where this one was going! What a tool.

My brother in law just got his first "old" car, an '85 MC SS with 40k original miles. This thing is imaculate. And he paid like $6k for it and was happy to do it.

  8. Sure it wasn't 12,000 pesos?

Jesus! that means my 67 cutl*** must be worth at least 80 large.

12 grand..isn't that within a couple of grand from when it was new? I had no idea those cars didn't depreciate as poorly as say...Corvettes. or Buick G.N.X,'s.
    or Hemi Cudas....sheesh.Some peoples kids!

Here's the Kelly Blue Book website, enter in the stuff you know and it will give you a fair price for that car from a private party. I guessed on some of the info, but that car, in "fair" condition is worth about $1,200 in San Diego.

So YES, they are out of their minds. Let them take it to Barret Jackson if they thing it's all that:D

This is a O/T subject since it is post 64, but WTH, I'll add to it just the same.

Too me personally, Monte Carlos SS's were never really all that special,
but I worked across the street @ the Buick dealer where a 85-87 Regal T-type,Grand National or Special Edition GNX wth S-W gauges would smoke
any of the neighbors best offerings;).

I always felt that the body work looked like an afterthought & the sport roof versions were just God Awful Ugly.
I bought a 19k mi gennie V8 ltd model Regal w/a 4spd auto from a lil old lady just south of Pasadena which before her ownership had been my bosses demo. I think it has like 70k on it now.

I think she only put 12k on it. My wife drove it 5-6yrs & I drove it another couple myself. If your kid needs a lesson, I'm sure that this car would suit him fine.=No rust whatsoever. It needs paint & a head liner and I'm sure there is some minor things that I'm forgetting, But It would be a heck of lot better priced than a 12k monte!

BTW, We ended up buying out the Chevy dealer cuz we out sold their cars @ a 4-1 ratio in our area. I restored my 69 Camaro there 16yrs ago there. Needs more color now=lol!
The Regal really hasn't been actively used in about 3yrs but she still runs very fine.

    Good luck in the search,
    Kevin
