Personally l have been using Fram filters, they’re adequate, my ot ranger recently ate the cam tensioner at 375000 km. Was a little surprised to find out after a little research most fail around 150000 - 200000 km. My OT tundra has 330000 km also Fram and Quakerstate , both work trucks, I use them for oilfield work so there’s also the idling time to consider, so I think as long as you change the oil regularly, which I do every 8 - 10000 k they’re just fine.

Fram is the filter of choice for Road Racers down our way. I have never witnessed one fail ever.

One caveat though: They always use Fram HP series which is USA Made
    [HP-4 or HP-6]
I am using a Fram HP-4 filter on my Chevy

All the other chain store brands available here are either Chinese or Thailand made

Who has a clearly substantiated engine failure directly attributed to a Fram oil filter? Not one you heard about from your neighbor’s uncle’s husband, but one we can read about in black and white.
Personally I’ve used them for years and never had an issue.

I still use the cheapest Fram filter I can find on my winter cars and both of them are still running strong after 5 years of neglect. I also save my used engine oil from my low mileage, seldom driven cars and dump it in them. Why waste oil that only has 300 miles on it?

Thats funny, I buy Motorcraft plugs at OReilly and from Rock Auto all the time for my ot 5.4 engines. Maybe they just quit selling plugs for the older engines?

Funny an old racer told me - yes Fram's are good - they stop stuff from getting through - BUT if you want some oil flow when you tach that engine out to it's limits....you'll want something else ! I run them but I stay way below the manufacturer's recommended red line..........

We used to run Fram on one of our stock car engines because we got them at a greatly reduced price thru a sponsor. We couldn't get the usual filter once since he was out of stock and went to Motorcraft. Picked up 20# of oil pressure instantly. Never bought another Fram filter. Started finding others that had the same results when we asked around. I do think their big race filters are better quality then the normal car filters.

I am gun shy enough about them that I will back down from a car purchase if it has a Fram filter on it. I consider it was poorly cared for if they didn't educate themselves enough to know all the issues Fram has had thru the years. I wince when I see them on cars in pictures.

Can't give you a black and white on paper or online report to read, but I have seen 2 Fram filters cause problems.
Didn't blow the engine up, but would have it not caught by observant drivers.

First instance, about 8 years ago, 7500 rpm capable, high volume oil pump, large sump pan solid lifter 383 SBC stroker owned by one of my best friends. He did an oil change, went from the Purolator filter I'd put on the last time we ran the valves and did general checks(it's a 10.60 sec, 122 mph 1/4 mile street strip car, '67 Elky) to a "orange fubar", calls me up 2 days later all wound up, "something is wrong, got only 10 psi oil pressure, WTF do we do now" and "haven't even run it hard since the oil change".
I swing over, tell him let's check the filter, we'll cut it open and diagnose what has happened.....plain to see the problem just as soon as the "orange fubar" is screwed off and we look at it, don't even need to cut it open, you can see right through the open neck hole the filter media is all collapsed and deformed and the anti drainback washer is 90% blocking the outlet.
New filter screwed on(Wix) and engine fired up, oil pressure instantly back to normal levels.

Second instance, nearly the same scenario, except it's a solid roller cam 406 SBC I built for a local guy.

I could give a third instance, step-dads 427 BBC....but I didn't actually see it, just heard about it during dinner table conversation at a holiday meet. He was the type of guy to buy consumable parts like that by the case, threw a half a case or so of Fram filters right in the trash after that.

Wix/Napa Gold , Purolator, K&N, Hastings are all I advise guys to use.

I have heard the newer performance grade Fram filters are ok...but I'm not going to take that risk.

  21. Had a car come in the shop. Had to straighten out some issues with some aftermarket fancy front engine bracket set. Anyway, the owner asked us to do the oil change why it’s in the shop. Parts store sends us an orange oil filter.
Did the oil change, cranked the car. No oil pressure. Told the boss. We disconnected the coil. Cranked the engine over a few seconds. No oil pressure. Not a budge on the gauge.
Car was fine before the oil change.
Called the parts place, they sent over a WIX filter. Swapped out the filter and magically the oil pressure gauge started moving up.
Last orange filter I ever touched.
If folks like em, use em.
I ran a bunch without any issues before this. Now I use OE, if not available it’s WIX or NAPA gold.

I didn't mean to ruffle any feather's with my post's, the OP asked about Fram filter's and thought the video that HRP and I put up may help answer the question. Like other's have said, If you like em, use em. As far as a young store manager doesn't know anything, I don't know any young one's, I haven't dealt with them for 5 or 6 year's. The manager's that I know,( also the buyer's, people from O'Reillys corporate, warehouse people, Springfield Mo. is the home of O'Reillys ) have been with the company for 15-20-25 years, I think I can take their word for it. Cut em open, compare em, make your decision. Doesn't bother me one way or the other.

  23. Steve, this never occurred to me about Motorcraft spark plugs. I did notice that they can’t be found in the aftermarket, but it never occurred to me why that is. We have four Fords on our farm and I noticed every time I look for plugs, no Motorcraft. However, other Motorcraft parts are readily available on the Rock and other places. I bought Motorcraft brake hardware for the back of my O/T Ranger when I did the brakes. Thanks for the information.

For a 4.6 Ford I use motorcraft brand because of the anti drain back valve inside some others don't have that. Maybe just me but the only filters that ever seized on there for me were frams. Had to chisel the ring off because the metal can tore. Go to a,Wal-Mart auto center see what they are putting on the cars all frams. Surprised they don't use super tech their own brand made by purolator.

With Fram like most things you get what you pay for. The price leader one is almost worthless the premium line is on par with Wix but cost more than the Wix.

Wonder why the HAMB even has a "Search" feature? Doesn't appear too many folks ever use it.
Wix and NAPA Gold made bt the same manufacturer.

I've used Fram for 45 years. Never an issue. Lucky? No manufacturer gets every product 100% right all the time, but Fram is still in business and sells an awful lot of filters for them to be really bad. But, it's the HAMB and you'll never convince a single one of us to change. Ford vs Chevy? Betty vs Veronica? Maryann vs Ginger? come on.
