Technical What did you do with your car today? * NEW*

Brought the mig welder home. Tomorrow the torches follow suit. But before fire and sparks, I need to run about 12' of service for mig. It's nice when service is just outside of garage.

May 7th 2020 Putting the trim back in the upper cab. The current screws I took out were self-tapping Phillips head screws that damaged the original threads and they won't accept the black clutchhead screws from Bowtie Bits. Fixing the threads for the clutchhead screws is a bridge too far. Change of plans. We are using the Phillips screws and moving on.

The existing cab windlace is like new and I'm keeping that. Deerslayer's builder, Tony, added several items that his wife, Joy, fabricated. She made the deerskin steering wheel cover that I kept until it wore thru. She also made the boots for the shift and parking brake levers and a firewall cover too. I think I see her handiwork in the windlace as well. It is cloth backed vinyl wrapped around what appears to be cotton clothesline and machine stitched. It's quality.

The trim pieces are a little rusty and I need to find a matching paint for touch-up. Pondered that while i sipped on the beer of the day, Bent River Brewing Co's Daytrotter Pale Horse Pale Ale.

It was Paint Your Wagon Wednesday, used Eastwood satin black on my 41Willys pickup....Looks OK for an amateur...Gonna be my last whole vehicle project, Even though I am careful, I don’t want to be around the chemicals anymore. Long day, but still fun!

 

Put together a list and shipped it off to Hilborn to start installing the stack injection on my Model A

 

I dream about mine being that messy.

 

Packing and shipping parts the last couple of days.

 

While it’s far from roadworthy, I had to take her out and get a few pic’s. First time it’s moved under it’s own power since ‘75-ish. Huge milestone.

First let me apologize for helping to mess up the old "what did you do today." I saw some of the other posts and put up some of my iron work I had done on my house. So here we go. Going to Little River/Academy this weekend to a nostalgia race with the stude. Washed the car for the first time in I don't know how long, aired up tires and charged the battery. Forgot how nice it looked clean.

 

Nothing....stuck in hotel in NJ for 14 day quarantine. This is day 4!!! Will attend training afterwards in preparation for upcoming deployment. What I’d give to just go outside and smell the exhaust of a hotrod running rich.

 

Picked up a parts truck from a buddy that owns a salvage in town. I think I need one of these big fork lifts to move stuff around at the house. I have never loaded a vehicle on the trailer so easy!

 

Today I installed a compete 4-wheel disc brake conversion on a swingaxle VW beetle.

The shoes, drums, and wheel cylinders were all unrecoverable, and it was actually cheaper to upgrade, rather than recreate. It stops alarmingly well now.

Then completely disassembled a pair of Edelbrock carburetors. Removed all of the choke mechanicals, milled off the choke housings, tapped and plugged all unused holes. After doing a surgical-quality cleaning, I converted them for boost referencing, via one of my custom 6-71 adapters.

 

Is this how the term "power parking" came into being?

 

I'll pre-post just in case I electrocute myself while running new service in the garage.

 

Got up, went to work. You know the type, essential! I did test fit my slicks last night though.

 

Removed the distributor from the Chevy engine in my '34 Ford and replaced the bushings. Then I put the dist. Back in and guess what? The engine started and ran smoothly . Damndest things happen when you have a clue as to what you are doing.

 

Sold a box of Winfield carburetor parts here on the HAMB, bought, stained, and installed more trim on the garage. Feels good

Today I flipped the internal gears in my Gold Track differential, so they would function properly, with a reverse ring-and-pinion.


I tried to safety wire the bolts, but gave up, after repeatedly stabbing my fingers with the wire.

Tomorrow is another day.

I finished putting the roadster back together, washed it, drove it down to get the roadworthy (first drive in about 4 months) and fell love again. All the hours of work forgotten in a 10 minute drive. How great are flatheads.

 

Slow day today.

I cleaned my workspace.

Then, I dug out my pair of Grand National hubs, with Chevy passenger car pattern, spun out the 5/8" coarse studs, and replaced them with stepped studs, at 1/2 fine.

I packaged up and shipped a few parts for some fellow Hamb ers. Then cleaned out the trunk on my 55, and cleaning out my garage to get ready for the 312 to come to it's new home.

After a long work week of 7am to 11pm days, I finally got a couple hours of garage time yesterday. First startup of the year, burped the air out of the cooling system, and checked for leaks. No leaks, and the new thermostat actually works, unlike the old one. Seeing the temp cycle between about 190 and 200 (180F stat), where the old one would go from cold to 240, then drop to 210 and stay there (195F stat, probably 1974 vintage stock). Pressure tested, and no leaks there either.

But I’ve got gas all over the place. Banjo fitting at the carb is leaking, again. Tightened it up, but either it’s still seeping, or the front bowl gasket is. Either way, I’ve got work to do. Bought a rebuild kit, carb comes off today.

Having a bit of an attack of while-I’m-at-it. The fuel pump to carb line is scabbed together from the remains of a stock steel line, a filter, rubber hose, and a bunch of hose clamps. Thinking about re-doing that with steel and eliminating the rubber lines.

Spent the day up until now (2:40 pm) chasing rumors. Old truck at a farm here...old car behind building there. Bought nothing but if you don't chase the rumors you don't get the finds. Did run across a pair of 1938 Ford moredoors that may yield some trinkets. In negotiations on those.

 

Got a new shaft from David at Limeworks......great company, support them please, we need them

 

I'm still kicking and now I can weld. More garage set up today at girlfriends house. Moved lighting around for better work condition's at night. Prior all loose 32 pieces went to work with me but no more. It's time to work on the vehicle it's self.

Cab off now and resting on it's back over the bed section to install wood blocking to underside. But before that I need to make a template of chassis (aftermarket) bolt holes for cab to mount to. They don't line with the cab for crap.
