Got a 62 Galaxie COM automatic trans to put in my 55 sunliner when it goes back to a Y block,a few years ago I picked up a 62 292 from a Galaxie for parts that had a automatic flywheel but the bolt holes for the torque converter look to be made for three bolts instead of the normal four. My friend that gave me the 62 trans could not find the torque converter when I picked it up and now thinks he found it and it has four studs like usual,so does anyone know if the 2 speed automatic was available in the Galaxies in 62 and if so would it have a different flywheel then one for a COM.. I know the 2 speed was available in 60 but not sure about 62.
While the 'true' two-speed Ford automatic was introduced in '59 and somewhat based on the earlier Fordomatic, it didn't share a ton of parts with the then-current trans so I suspect you'll need to find the 'correct' flywheel and/or convertor for the COM. The 2-speeds were primarily used in Falcon, Fairlane, and six-cylinder big cars.
According to my old Hollander, the 2spd was available with the 292 in 61-62 Galaxies. I'm not positive but I think they were 3 bolt. 3 stud, really as the studs were welded in the converter and have been known to crack, leak fluid and ruin transmissions. Bought a little ranchero years ago with a 'deep main bearing knock". After replacing the converter and clutches, really cheap little truck.
If you want to talk to a Ford guy with used parts and knows crossover of Y Blocks call Stan the Ford man in Wa. state at 360-687-1216. He is a very good guy to know.
My old interchange book says that a cruiseomatic flexplate is B8A6375D fits 58-62 8-292 and a fordomatic flexplate is an B8A6375B that fits 8-292 59-62 ford. Find the correct flexplate-flywheels. bolt it together and use it.
I have a three bolt flywheel so its for the 2 speed and will not work,I am thinking about just having it redrilled if I can not find the correct flywheel.
The bolt holes don't have to be dead-nuts on as the torque convertor indexes off the crankshaft, so you could home drill that.
Make sure the convertor will fit the 292. Ford used two different pilot diameters, a 1.576" that fits the 223 and 292, and a 1.853" for the FE. The later motors used an even smaller diameter. As a worst-case, you could possibly use a newer convertor with an adaptor sleeve.
