Here is a shot in living color.
Prior to the Chevy II Al raced a 48 Anglia that also carried the Growler name and is seen here being towed by his 48 Chevy "Iron Fireman". Al also raced a 64 Chevy Impala B/FX named the "Big Growler"

Al passed away in 2017 at the age of 91 but his long time sponsor Loehmann Chevrolet is still around in Waterbury CT .

Actually this is Lew Arrington's first Brutus funny car that was at times driven by Jungle Jim Liberman. (and the Art Carr Torqueflite is the one that exploded on the start line at Lions, filling the car with flames)

If I had to pick my favorite Funny, out of all of them, I would have to pick Arrington's '65, "Brutus". My neighbor built a model of it way back when, and had it loaded up on a model of Tom Daniel's "Beer Wagon", that had been converted to a ramp bed car hauler.

I have a question about the Brutus. I heard Jungle Jim drove it early in his career. Any truth to it? Seems strange a guy from across the country would be driving a west coast car back then.

  18. He did drive the lew Arrington's Brutus 65 gto while he was in California. I think he moved east while he had the nova. He went from the gto to his own nova then to a camaro. Lew Arrington continued with brutus funny cars and ran a firebird.

Did you read it here ;)
As racer-x notes Liberman built his Nova while he was living in California (it was sponsored by nor-cal's Goodies Speed Shop). He had first gen Nova called Hercules (injected nitro) prior to driving for Arrington, and subsequently building the second gen Nova which was the first to carry the Jungle Jim name.

As noted by loudbang the early funny cars were forced to run as fuel dragsters until 1967 when the NHRA introduced the /XS (Experimental Stock) category that later became /FC. At that time all of the NHRA classes apart from /FD and AA/FA ran gasoline so even if an early funny car met the rest of the rules for another class the fuel made it ineligible.
It is interesting that although the 1968 rule book list the S/XS class in Super Eliminator there is no listing of class rules, unlike the 1967 book which lists 5 classes in the /XS category with S/XS, A/XS and B/XS being permitted to run nitro.
