1957 Ford Custom 300

Discussion in 'New to the H.A.M.B.? Introduce yourself here!' started by Doyle_57FordCustom, May 18, 2020.

  1. Hey guys! I’m from Ottawa Canada and I recently bought my first cl***ic! When I got it a couple weeks ago I drove it onto the trailer and when I got it home I drove it off the trailer and into my driveway. Ran fine. Started fine. No issues that I could tell. The next day I couldn’t get it running. It’s the Ford 223 inline 6. I had a couple guys come look at it and they gave me some things to try. So here’s what I did:
    New plugs (wires appear new)
    Ignition coil
Points (set to .25 with a gauge)
    Condenser
    Resistor
    Inline fuel filter
Drained gas tank put in a fresh tank of premium.
It fired up! Great!! So I thought. It takes a long time to start. It’s getting fuel and it’s getting spark as it clearly ran. Once running, it idles high. I played with the throttle and the fuel air mixture. My problem is it takes forever to get it started. It’s currently at a mechanic and he’s fixed a few things (seals etc) but still has a tough time starting it. The intake is not stock and does not have the vacuum hose so the hose just sits there not connected. Is that an issue?
I’m so stumped. It ran fine the day I got it and now I can’t get it going. Any help is super appreciated.
    Thank you!!

Hi. ***uming your distributor has vacuum advance that could be a problem. Most carburators have a vacuum fitting on one side near it's base. If not used it usually has a rubber push over plug to seal the vacuum leak.
My guess on this is the hose came off that fitting and is just laying there not connected and you are ****ing air into base of carb thru the open fitting. Easy to check & fix. Sounds like your guys were just guessing on things and really had no clue. Most modern trained mechanics also have no clue on older engines because all they know about trouble shooting is hook the computer reader to it.
    Good luck, Jim

  3. Hi Jim,
Thanks for your help on this. The vacuum lines come from the fuel pump. One goes into the wiper motor and the other one was supposed to go into the intake manifold. The original intake had a port for the vacuum line. The current intake does not have the port. After consulting some other people about this, I’m told the vacuum lines are only for the wiper motor and serve no other purpose.
I’m thinking it’s a carb issue. I’ll tell my mechanic to check the float and the needle. Although he’s a mechanic and should know that! Lol
It just really drives me crazy that it ran when I bought it now won’t.
Thanks for your thoughts! Much appreciated
    Ryan
