What is width of 1940 mercury coupe rearend?..i have opportunity to pick up a maverick rear...my merc is being transported as we speak so i cant check it...but this rear may be gone before my merc arrives...can someone check the drawing with maverick dimensions and let me know...thanks
I think the Maverick rear might be a little narrower, those Maverick rears are some of the narrowest 5-lug rears. But that might be a good thing if you plan to lower the car and it will help getting the wheel off; plus potentially allow some better wheel choices with offset. Assuming the price is good, pick it up anyway. You can always sell it and recover your money. Maverick rearend is the choice for many 49-51 Shoebox Fords. If out of a stock Maverick, it is likely a 3.00-1 ratio, I think that is what most Mavericks had. Or will be 2.79-1. Those are also the most common 8-inch gear ratios found.
I see in the above chart it says 40 Ford rears measure 59 1/4 in. I measured mine very carefully and it is 59 1/2 in. I doubt if 1/4 in. makes a big difference.
At $300 its not a bargain, but its complete untouched, unweathered, e brake cables...and driveshaft to boot!
I think Mavericks were 56" overall width. You might have a backing plate to frame clearance problem. A 40 Ford frame measures just under 44" at axle center line.
I thought the Bronco 9" was a better fit for those? @ 58" BTW, around here $300 isn't too bad, there's still room for resale if needed.
Most people measure wheel-mounting-surface to wheel-mounting-surface. That's what counts. Sure you might have clearance issues with springs and frame rails in between the backing plates on really narrow rearends, but that's all for naught if the wheels won't mount in the right place.
