Reason #432 why the HAMB rules...

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Flingdingo, Jun 27, 2006.

  1. So Longroof64 decided he had one too many projects laying around, so why not auction the car off. No, not on E-gay, how 'bout right here, with all proceeds going to support the HAMB.

For the princely sum of $500, I became the proud new owner of a 64 Lincoln Continental. Now this wasn't some heap that had been languishing in his backyard for years. During the car's stay at Ryan's (Longroof64's) house, he went through the brakes, had all 5 wheels bead blasted and powder coated, mounted 5 new tires, bought new taillights, and probably many more small things that I haven't discovered yet. Needless to say, he sunk way more $$$ into it than I paid for it.

Enter Mark (chopinarizona), who agreed to pick up and load this big bitch and deliver it to me, with roughly 2 days notice. Not only did he change his plans to accomodate me, but when he discovered this thing outweighed his tow rig, and his trailer hitch wasn't rated for the load, he purchased and installed a new hitch, just to deliver my new car!!

THAT, friends and neighbors, is what the HAMB is all about.

So BIG thanks to Ryan (Longroof64) for donating this car to support the HAMB.

And HUGE thanks to Mark (chopinarizona) for going out of his way to do a fellow HAMBer a favor.

And of course thanks to Ryan (da boss) and everyone else who works so hard to bring us the HAMB, day in and day out.

On to the first update -

No pics, since my camera got in a fight with my computer, but... I got the car, looked it over closely, and ordered a bunch of parts. I changed all the fluids, replaced the master cylinder which was leaking brake fluid into the booster. (The booster is probably bad, but I will deal with that later.) Either Longroof64 or the previous owner had the carb and distributor rebuilt, installed new plugs, wires, a fuel tank, and various hoses. So after the stuff I did, I threw a battery at it and twisted the key. It runs!!

I have a few issues to deal with still, like -

    - The overflow tank and intake manifold are very corroded, and so far have resisted every attempt to seal the thermostat mounting area.

    - No one around here can get me a tranny pan gasket. I need one so I can change the fluid.

    - This is a real learning experience for me, as I know nothing about these cars other than I like their looks.

...but with a little luck, it should be registered and drivable within a week. My initial plans are to get everything (windows, etc.) working, and then attack the body work. I've got 2 other o/t projects that my wife says I need to finish before buying another car (oops:D ) and then I can figure out what I want to to with this one.

  3. So heres the next part...

I have a 64 in my yard that you can come up and pick off what ever you need. You pull it.

Just the stuff you need for your car.

Let me know what you need, I'll check it out before you come.

yep...gotta love this place! As for the pan gasket why not just make your own? Get gasket material at the parts store, after you get the pan off the tranny try to save the old gasket as a template...if you can't,then gently hammer on the gasket as it is being held against the tranny.....that will mark everywhere you need holes and the shape you need to cut the gasket. Use a razor blade to cut the gasket and to do the holes go to harbor freight and get hole punches...they are cheap and very handy! Or if you are cheap, make your own by sharpening the edge of a piece of hard line like 1/4 " brake line.

    Anyway..good luck,sounds like a great car!

  6. Congrats. One more in the HAMB auction vehicle corral.

Keep us updated on progress, sounds like you're moving a bit quicker than I am.

  7. The good thing is, I have the car at work, so when the day is done, I can spend some time messing with it.

The bad thing is, I have the car at work, and it's taking up space, so I have to get it roadworthy quickly, so I don't piss off my boss.

I'll make a pan gasket as a last resort, I'd rather buy the kit with a new filter if it's possible.
